    This is the first semester of a yearlong introduction to classical electromagnetic theory. The course covers electrostatic fields, magnetic fields, electric and magnetic properties of matter, and electromagnetic energy relationships. Lectures are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 9:05-9:55 in Cook A402. Office hours are Tuesday 1:30-3:30pm, or by appointment. The required text is Introduction to Electrodynamics , by D.J. Griffiths. Other texts that you may find useful include:

    General
    Neutron scattering is a prime tool for the investigation of magnetism in materials. Since the neutron has a magnetic dipole moment, the intensity of Bragg peaks in a neutron scattering spectrum is proportional to the square of the magnetic moment per unit volume. This means that inelastic neutron scattering is related to the magnetic susceptibility. The magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation can also be determined from experiments on conventional magnetometers. We use a combination of these techniques to gain insight into the behaviour of ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, spin glass and low dimensional magnetic materials. For more information General

    Using the MPMS-7 SQUID magnetometer, you can measure the magnetisation of your specimen in applied magnetic inductions of -7 T to +7 T throughout a temperature range of 1.7 K to 800 K. The SQUID magnetometer is open to bookings from visitors as well as research staff, postgraduate students and honours students at Monash University.     • What is a magnetic field? What are magnetic field lines?
      Magnetic fields are historically described in terms of their effect on electric charges. A moving electric charge, such as an electron, will accelerate in the presence of a magnetic field, causing it to change velocity and its direction of travel. This is, for example, the principle used in televisions, computer monitors, and other devices with CRTs ( cathode-ray tubes ). In a CRT, electrons are emitted from a hot filament. A voltage difference pulls these electrons from the filament to the picture screen. Electromagnets surrounding the tube cause these electrons to change direction, so they hit different locations on the screen. This is how it works: An electrically charged particle moving in a magnetic field will experience a force (known as the Lorentz force ) pushing it in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic field and the direction of motion: As a result of this force, the charged particle accelerates in the direction of the force (this is Newton's second law). In the diagram above the particle's trajectory will curve upward.

    When handling magnets, you need to be careful not to weaken them or demagnetize them.
    When storing bar magnets, you need to place them together north pole to south pole, as not to weaken them. Think about it. When magnets are placed with like poles near each other, they try to push away; keep it that way for a while, and you'll come back to a weak or non-working magnet.
    In order to not demagnetize a magnet, you can't drop it, because when you drop the magnet, the atoms may get scrambled and won't be magnetic anymore. You also can't expose a magnet to extreme heat, as that will also demagnetize it. ...back
