The Lower Peninsula, shaped like a mitten, is separated from Ontario, Canada, on the east by Lake Erie and Lake Huron, and by the Detroit River and the St. Clair River, which together link these two Great Lakes. It is bordered by Lake Michigan on the west, across which lies Wisconsin. The Upper Peninsula lies northeast of Wisconsin between Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, and is separated from Ontario by the narrow St. Marys River. The Upper Peninsula. known as the U.P. (its residents call themselves Yoopers), is separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac; a bridge connecting the two peninsulas was opened in 1957 and has spurred the development of the Upper Peninsula. The eastern portion of the Upper Peninsula has swampy flats and limestone hills on the Lake Michigan shore, while sandstone ridges rise abruptly from the rough waters of Lake Superior; in the west the land rises to forested mountains, still rich in copper and iron. The northern Michigan wilds, numerous inland lakes, and some 3,000 mi (4,800 km) of shoreline, combined with a pleasantly cool summer climate, have long attracted vacationers. Grade level: 4th grade.
Materials: A map of the U.S., a map of Michigan, and a blank map for the evaluation.
Procedure:
Show a map of the U.S. and ask if the students know where Michigan is on the map. Have someone point it out.
Tell the students the Michigan motto: If you seek a pleasant
peninsula, look about you. Ask for the definition of what a peninsula is. Give the definition: a body of land surrounded on 3 sides by water. Show the Upper and Lower Peninsulas on a map.
Show the Great Lakes on the map, and explain how they can remember them by the acronym of HOMES: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior.
Point out some of the larger islands that belong to Michigan:
Mackinac, Beaver, Isle Royale, Manitou and Drummond.
Talk about the Mackinac Bridge that now connects the 2 peninsulas.
Inform them that Michigan also has more than 11,000 inland lakes, many rivers and 1 mountain range (Porcupine Mountains). Point out where the mountain range is on the map.
Evaluation: Have a blank map of the state of Michigan and have the students label it with the places that were discussed above.

ARTICLE NINE THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY CONTENT STANDARDS
Captializing on the Goodness of Fit By JOSEPH P. STOLTMAN
Professor of Geography, Western Michigan University pdf file
There is little doubt that the national standards movements in geography, history, government, and the independent standards initiative in economics have elevated the attention given to those disciplines within the United States. Geography, for example, is being viewed for the first time since the beginning of the 20th century as a discipline with a measure of importance to the citizenry of the country. The consideration is not only that United States students need to be as competent in geography as students in other countries of the world, but that a geographic perspective enables people to recognize, address, and resolve problems and issues that face them as individuals and communities. Geography for Life (Geography Education Standards Project, 1994) is just that. It identifies the good sense and life proficiencies that are enhanced by geographic learning that enable students to fulfill their roles as responsible citizens both presently and in the future.
