If You Build It They Will Come
Cherokee Elementary School livens up “Family Night” with Build Your Own Pizzas and Got Milk? promotions If you want to get families together (and you want them to be happy) you might want to follow School Health Team Leader Susan Santi’s advice: “Feed them,” she recommends. “And make it pizza!” Last March during National Nutrition month Susan and her creative and dedicated school health team of parents, food service staff, teachers, MSU Extension staff, and other community supporters conducted two nutrition education activities which were funded by a $500 Michigan Team Nutrition TEAM CASH! III grant.
Gimme Five was a 5 A Day promotional activity where students and families were invited to build their own fresh fruit or veggie pizzas. Got Milk? was a milk-drinking promotion where students were invited to learn about the benefits of drinking milk, taste-test different types of milk, and get a family picture taken with their whole family sporting milk mustaches.
“Both activities went really well,” explains Susan, “We wanted to make sure people would come so we scheduled it on a night when families were already planning on coming to the school. We knew our pizzas were definitely a success when people turned down the traditional pizza and pop we were offering in the other room, and opted for our veggie pizzas. We’ve had lots of positive feedback, we’ll definitely do something similar to this event again in March.”

The PTA goes Kaput This year, the National Congress of Parents and Teachers, commonly known as the PTA, is celebrating its centennial. But the national PTA has little to cheer about. Fewer than a quarter of America's public schools have active PTA chapters, and officially, PTA membership has fallen from a peak of 12 million in 1966 to 6.5 million today. PTA leaders offer many reasons why their rolls are declining. But they have done little to address the PTA's gravest problemits subservience to the National Education Association Federation of Teachers (AFT). Throughout its history, the PTA has supported higher salaries and better working conditions for teachers. But in 1968, the teacher members of the PTA threatened to withdraw membership and boycott the PTA if the PTAs supported school boards in teacher strikes. Thereupon, the PTA rolled over and adopted a position of "neutrality" on teacher strikes as well as the issues negotiated in union contracts, such as class size, the annual number of parent-teacher conferences, and how parental grievances are resolved. "Neutrality" on these important issues is a big setback for parents: When school boards sacrifice parent interests to teacher interests, as often happens, the PTA does not object. As millions of parents dropped out of the PTA, those who remained tended to be pro-union or unaware of the PTA's pro-union positions. And so the PTA has gradually evolved into a front for the teachers' unions. Consider these recent issues:

Think again. By Heather Koerner Think Parent Teacher T hey're involved in everything from back-to-school night to teacher appreciation lunches, from classroom volunteering to shelving library books. They raise money through dances, golf tournaments, cookbooks and, yes, even pig-kissing contests. They're your local PTA-Parent Teacher Association-and, to almost anyone you stop on the street, they're as American as apple pie. At least that's what Glenna Williamson thought. Williamson, a mother of three from Dodge City, Kan., was concerned about a lack of playground equipment (the district couldn't afford what many parents wanted) and safety (kids would have to cross a major thoroughfare, without a crosswalk, to get to school). What better way to address these issues than to join the PTA? So she did and eventually became president of her school's chapter. But then Williamson learned about a whole new side of the PTA-its politics.
