Minnesota Road Trip
A Minnesota Geography Lesson Plan Summary : This intermediate to middle-grade lesson plan is designed to explore four of the five themes of geography (location, place, movement, and regions) as they relate to Minnesota through planning a seven-day trip around the state. Though this activity can be done individually, it works best if students complete it in groups of three or four. Suggested time for the project is about five hours (five one-hour class periods). Objectives : 1) Students will plan a week-long trip around the state of Minnesota which includes all four regions of the state.
2) Students will write a detailed itinerary for their trip which consists of descriptions of each day's agenda including both places visited and routes traveled to get from place to place.
3) Students will fill in a blank map of Minnesota with the places and routes listed in their itinerary. Materials : Good Minnesota road maps, line drawings of Minnesota (have students draw basic Minnesota maps, or go to Map of Minnesota or Printable Minnesota State Map to print a basic map), and Internet access.

Canadian Shield , from which iron ore is decreasingly extracted. The Vermilion and Cuyuna ranges (discovered in 1884 and 1911) are virtually depleted, and the once rich Mesabi range (1890) has also declined. South of the iron country, famous for its old-time boom towns, lie rolling hills. In the south and the west are prairies, fertile farming country. The state has more than 11,000 lakes and numerous streams and rivers. The rivers feed three great river systems: The Red River of the north and its tributaries in the west run north through Manitoba's lakes to Hudson Bay; streams in the east run into Lake Superior, and eventually into the St. Lawrence; and the Mississippi flows south from Minnesota headwaters above Lake Itasca, gathering volume from the waters of the St. Croix and Minnesota rivers before leaving the state. The beauty of Minnesota's lakes and dense green forests, as seen in Voyageurs National Park, has long attracted vacationers, and there is excellent fishing in the state's many rivers, lakes, and streams. Also of interest to tourists are the Grand Portage and Pipestone national monuments (see

This connection will enable us to learn more about ourselves and about our partners - what is similar and what is different between Israeli and American Jewish teens.
For some of the students this is a second year project. How exciting! The students are' coming to the project with good memories from last year and lots of expectations.
    Specific Objectives:
    • Reinforce formal connection and create new connection between American and Israeli teens that deepens their understanding of what it means to be "Am Yisrael Echad". Get to know students from the other side of the ocean.

Geography Rivers are the outstanding geographic features of the five Minnesota counties (Hennepin, Ramsey, Anoka, Dakota and Washington) included in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area. Here the Mississippi pours over the only waterfall in its entire length and is joined by the Minnesota River from the west and the St. Croix from the northeast. A lock now brings watercraft past the Falls of St. Anthony to the upper harbor, in downtown Minneapolis.
The Falls of St. Anthony, given its present name by French missionary Louis Hennepin, is shown in this painting by the artist Henry Lewis as it looked in the 1840s.
Prized by Euro-Americans for its water power, the falls became a saw-milling center and the nucleus of an industrial city in the 1850s. Drawing from Harpers Monthly Vol. XXX No. 1534.
In the 1870s and 1880s sawmills at the falls gave way to flour mills, and Minneapolis became famous as the world's breadbasket. Drawing from Harpers Monthly Vol. XXX No. 1534.
Below the falls, the banks of the river rise steeply, forming a narrow gorge, and it is joined by Minnehaha Creek. This stream rises in a cluster of lakes to the west of Minneapolis. As it approaches the Mississippi, it pours over a scenic waterfall.
