    Childhood Nutrition
Children with Special Health Care Needs Children with special health care needs are those who have or are at increased risk for a chronic physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional condition and who also require health and related services of a type or amount beyond that required by children generally. There is now a broad recognition that the quality of life for children and youth with special health care needs is best if they have access to comprehensive, family-centered, culturally competent, coordinated, and fully inclusive service systems at the community level. Visit the Maternal and Child Health Bureau website for links to information related to children with special health care needs. For information that will help provide culturally and linguistically appropriate services, visit the website of the Early Childhood Research Institute A study conducted by The Office of Children with Special Health Care Needs in Washington State and funded in part by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Health and Human Services, found that "an investment in professional time with multiple family/child contacts can achieve improvements in nutrition and feeding problems and result in savings in overall health care expenditures." http://www.lincolnu.edu/~ddalton/cshfacts.htm
    Coordinated School Health Programs
    Why they are important
Children must be healthy to be educated and must be educated to be healthy. Our children are our most treasured resource, and we must prepare them for the future. In order to do so, we must help them make the most of their education. Children who are sick, hungry or hurt are not prepared and willing to learn. Therefore, basic needs have to be satisfied before learning can take place. Our children are our future. Everyone pays when children have health problems, and everyone benefits when those problems are remedied or prevented. That is why individuals, families, schools and communities must become partners in promoting children's health. Children spend a lot of time at school. Schools can help children develop the attitudes, knowledge and skills that lead to healthy, productive lives. Coordinated School Health Programs can help students attain good health, an essential for academic and lifelong success.
    Coordinated School health Programs
are a cost-effective, collaborative way to promote the health of your community's students. A school health program that effectively addresses students' health and therefore improves their ability to learn, consists of many components. Each component contributes in its own unique way, while overlapping with the others.

Prospective Students Current Students Visitor Information Faculty/Staff ... Home Food, Nutrition and Health Food, Nutrition and Health programming within Lincoln University Cooperative Extension can be divided into three broad areas: Nutrition education of food stamp recipients; Food safety education in two distinct programs; and general nutrition and health programming statewide. A description and evaluation of each follows.
    A. Nutrition education of food stamp recipients
This project is being conducted with the assistance of a Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program (FSNEP) grant from USDA/FNS. LUCE and the State Specialist oversee this program in two sites: St. Louis City and the Southeast Missouri office in Lilbourn. In St. Louis City, we employ two nutrition paraprofessionals to conduct nutrition education with groups of senior citizens in low income group residential sites around the city. One paraprofessional is also conducting some home visits.
The Southeast Missouri office oversees six nutrition paraprofessionals, one in each of six Bootheel counties – Dunklin, Mississippi, New Madrid, Pemiscot, Scott, and Stoddard Counties. These paraprofessionals conduct home visits and also work with groups of senior citizens, especially with grandparents providing child care for their grand children. Some of the paraprofessionals work with youth in LUCE’s Kid’s Beat program, as well. In addition paraprofessionals in both sites attend health fairs to provide information to others who might want to enroll in the program.
