Owl Tales from Africa - Postscripts to Owls in Lore and Culture
by Bruce G. Marcot http://www.spiritone.com/~brucem/owlloreafrica.htm 1 August 2000 I recently returned from 3+ weeks in southern Africa, mostly in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and the Caprivi Strip of Namibia (also corners of Botswana and Zambia). I camped out and stayed in a wide variety of habitats and locations from the coast, along the Limpopo and Zambezi Rivers, in thornveld woodland, and on a river island in the Zambezi marshlands. I spent time with some of the locals of Zulu, Ndebele, Shona, and Balozi tribes, and asked them about their local owl lore. The answers, across all these sites and cultures, was consistent with what my co-authors and I had presented in our paper on Owls in Lore and Culture In general, owls are viewed as harbingers of bad luck, ill health, or death.

Information courtesy of Bradt Guides. This highly praised guide is written by Chris McIntyre, a tour operator who specialises in southern Africa. His unbeatable knowledge of the country is augmented by ecologist Jonathan Hughes who describes how animals and plants survive the desert conditions. Namibia is the ideal country for a self-drive holiday, so this book is predominantly aimed at those travellers. Fifty clear maps and detailed listings of the lodges, guest farms and bushcamps make this guide the essential purchase.
Drive through Namibia's wide expanses of pristine wilderness and you could spend hours without seeing a soul. Instead of people there are unique plants and animals; intimate lodges and guest farms take the place of large hotels. From the capital, Windhoek, visitors can choose to explore seemingly endless dunes, deep canyons, well-stocked game parks, the wild Skeleton Coast or the verdant attractions of the Caprivi Strip.
The Namib Desert has plants and animals found nowhere else on earth. Here is the world's oldest desert, where endemic wildlife has evolved to survive - like the contorted Welwitschia mirabilis that live for millennia, the elusive golden mole and the unique fog-basking beetles. Vast tracts of land remain protected as national parks, supplemented by conservancies where the scattered local communities protect the wildlife in their own areas. With such schemes, the Kaokoveld nurtures a thriving population of desert-adapted elephants and black rhino, while the Caprivi Strip's wildlife is found far beyond the borders of its parks. Best of all Namibia's wilderness is still easy to explore independently, and it always appears empty. Even in Eosha, one of Africa's top parks, driving around is easy; you just stop beside the water-holes for as long as you like. Animals wander all around, as you sip a cold drink and focus your camera.

Experiencing and learning their culture is all part of the ve bow hunted all my life, and namibia is the bow hunter should make one trip to africa before they
    http://www.ombengu.com/samuel.html
Letter from Dr. David Samuel Dear Fellow Adventurer, I made my first bow hunting trip to Africa in 1988. I was excited, but there were many North American species waiting for me to bow hunt, so I figured this was a one-and-done deal. After all, how much different could Africa be? That trip showed me that the Dark Continent is very different, a totally unique bow hunting adventure, and since then I've returned six more times. What makes your Namibian bow hunting adventure so unique? First, Ombengu has some great animals. Huge kudu, lots of big gemsbok, tremendous eland (the biggest bulls I've ever seen anywhere), mountain zebra, wart hogs, and the list goes on and on . The sweeping spiral horns of the kudu, the straight spires of the gemsbok, the enormity of the eland....this is what will bring you back to Ombengu time after time. Then there are the non-game species. Eagles, vultures, hundreds of species of multi-colored song birds, various members of the cat family and many other species are constantly seen during your hunt. The camp itself is part of the experience. Your private cottage will include baths, showers, and a veranda overlooking the valley. Laundry is done for you every day. Meals are made to order. Arriving back to camp there will be wine and appetizers while sitting around a fire. Dinners are often three-four-course meals typical of some of the finest restaurants. How about having dinner on an open patio while elephants and kudu water less than fifty yards away? That happens every night at Ombengu. For the non hunter, and hunter as well, there is Etosha National Park, only fifteen minutes from the camp. This park is huge, as large as some small European countries. Go to the water hole observatory area near the entrance to the park and watch the parade of zebra, gemsbok, springbok, and wildebeest that continues throughout the day. On my last trip there I observed over 1,000 animals the first hour. Later I saw elephants and lions as well.

    Namibia: making democracy work
After the political, economic reconciliation is now the 'second phase of our struggle'
A country which went through a bitter and prolonged war of liberation, Namibia celebrated its ninth year of independence in March. In an interview with Africa Recovery , Prime Minister Hage Geingob talks about his government's efforts to foster democracy and development.
    By Peter Mwaura
Since independence, Namibia has been relatively peaceful and stable. How have you managed this? Our struggle was about peace. We, therefore, upon achieving independence, adopted a policy of national reconciliation. We said we had a bitter past, we hated each other, but after independence we should hold hands. We should live together and forget the past and forge ahead, because we all belong to Namibia and must do what we have to do to live in peace. How did you sell the policy of reconciliation to the whites? Swapo, headquartered in Lusaka during the struggle, initiated the policy. We started to invite some whites to come out to Zambia to meet us. They didn't know us as ordinary human beings, that we also had basic needs like they did, like wanting our children to have three square meals a day, and to go to school, and come back unmolested. So when they discovered that we have the same desires, they accepted the policy of reconciliation. Does reconciliation in practice mean an acceptance of socio-economic inequalities?
