Parent’s guide to the curriculum by Judith Puddick Parents often profess to being bemused by the modern school curriculum particularly when their children come home talking about PSHE, DT and ICT. Many children, however, say nothing at all about school or tell you they have been playing all day, so it can be quite a surprise for parents when a school report comes home listing all the different subjects taught during the year. This article covers three questions about the curriculum commonly asked by parents: Who decides what should be taught at school? What are the National Literacy and Numeracy strategies? Why does the curriculum vary in different schools? Who decides what should be taught at school? Until 1988 schools were free to decide what they taught their pupils, with religious education being the only compulsory subject. This obviously gave rise to great variation amongst schools so in order to ensure all pupils had access to a balanced education the National Curriculum was developed listing the subjects to be covered, detailing what should be taught and stating the standards or levels expected by pupils at age 7, 11 and 14. For primary pupils, aged 5 – 11, other than those educated privately, the National Curriculum is a statutory requirement. It currently consists of three core subjects – English maths and science; and seven foundation subjects – design and technology (DT), information and communication technology (ICT), history, geography, art and design, music and physical education (PE). National Curriculum Schemes of Work For teachers to get to grips with the intricacies of national curriculum programmes of study is in itself no small challenge. Planning short and long term schemes of work either for individual, departmental or whole school based on these is an enormously time consuming task. They must create a framework of teaching activities, which fulfill the objectives and teaching outcomes, of the national scheme. Their job has now been made considerably easier with national schemes of work for both primary and secondary across all curricular areas. Teachers can view and download the schemes from the government qualifications and curriculum authority website. The schemes are divided by subject into primary and secondary and are a positive gold mine of information. At a glance teachers can view the subject objectives for the specific year group. Within these they can home in on key units of study. Within these they are offered a full range of varied classroom activities and teaching strategies. All of which is then linked up to the key national curriculum learning outcomes to which they should be working. In other words teachers no longer have to reinvent the wheel to make their teaching both interesting and effective. Within religious education for example, the teacher of a KS3 class can select one of the curriculum’s fifteen units of study. Let’s say the teacher is working on the key question ‘Where do we look for God?’ Firstly she can read a resume of the expected learning outcomes and the anticipated number of hours of study needed to cover it.
