FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SACRAMENTO) – Attorney General Bill Lockyer today announced the creation of an Office of Native American Affairs within the Department of Justice. Two Native American employees of the department, Olin Jones and Marcia Hoaglen, were named to head the new office.
"California's Native American governments are important partners in our state," Lockyer said. "The Office of Native American Affairs will help foster respectful government to government relationships with California's sovereign Indian Nations."
Olin Jones, a member of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma, was named as the Director of the Office of Native American Affairs. Jones has spent the last decade working closely with Native American tribes on crime prevention issues and improved access to health and welfare resources. He has been a Program Manager for the Attorney General's Crime and Violence Prevention Center since 1996. From 1989 to 1996, Jones worked for the Governor's Office of Criminal Justice Planning (OCJP) and served as a liaison to California's Native American community. At OCJP, Jones developed the state's first grant funding program crafted specifically to benefit Native Americans on tribal lands. Jones is a graduate of the University of North Dakota.
Marcia Hoaglen, a member of the Round Valley Tribes of Mendocino County, was named Assistant Director for the Office of Native American Affairs. Hoaglen has been an advocate on behalf of Native Americans for nearly three decades. Prior to joining the Department of Justice, she worked for the United Indians of All Tribes Foundation and the Seattle Indian Health Board in Washington. From 1978 - 1982 Hoaglen helped provide medical and dental services for California's Indian Tribes as a staff member for the California Rural Indian Health Board. Hoaglen has worked for the Department of Justice for more than twelve years.

(Also PHIL 460). This course deals with Native American thought from an experiential point of view. It examines myth and legends of various kinds to "construct" the outlook or "world view" of the American Indian. No prerequisite. Course Philosophy
All too often American Indian philosophy, spirituality, and intellectual endeavors are compared and contrasted with European disciplinary counterparts. In this class, we will attempt to construct native philosophy, with an emphasis on the Dakota/Lakota/ Nakota people, from a wide array of sources. Based primarily on American Indian oral history and artistic endeavors, we will explore these strands of thought with the idea of bringing a better understanding to the Indian presence as it prepares to move into the twenty-first century.

http://www.wvculture.org/arts/ethnic/native.html
Native American Communities in West Virginia
(as originally published in 1999) In West Virginia, the contemporary Native American population can best be described as a statewide community, consisting of a far-reaching network of individuals with Native American ancestry. There are approximately 3000 Native Americans in West Virginia. The community includes individuals from at least 43 different bloodlines and tribal associations. These are descendants from the regional Native Americans, including Cherokee and Shawnee, and individuals who more recently relocated to West Virginia from throughout North America. Many people in West Virginia have Native American blood, but do not have a historical tribal association, and many individuals have mixed blood, that is, ancestry of different tribes as well as different races in addition to Native American. The contemporary community reflects those who are finding new pride in their native heritage, and Native Americans who are newcomers to this area and who represent the pan-Indian community. The Native American community has struggled with oppression, imposed disruption, and insecurity since the arrival of European settlers in West Virginia. Individuals were being shipped away to Oklahoma reservations as late as the 1950s. As recently as 1964, it was illegal for a Native American to own property in West Virginia. In spite of these hardships, vestiges of communities survived and their heritage is re-emerging with renewed pride.

On the people that dominated the southern Colorado Plateau roughly 800 to 1,000 years ago (Brady, Maxwell Museum of Anthro., U. of New Mexico, places the Anasazi at "less than 2,000 years ago" in his first chapter).
