Native American Literature We have composed a list of some of the more popular children's literature pieces that would be very beneficial to use in a classroom. Any of these itmes can surely be found at your local library, or as a last resort ordered through Amazon.com Chaput, Donald. Michigan Indians: A Way of Life Changes . Hillsdale Educational Publishers, Inc., 1970. This book has information of the Sioux, Huron, Iroquois, Chippewa, Menominee, Shawnee, Sac, Fox, and Ottawa tribes. It looks at such things as their homes, clothes, games, weapons, handicrafts, foods, and religion. This book also contains the names of several places in Michigan and what they mean. The end of the book contains a section on some important Michigan Native Americans. McCowen, Emilene. The Potawatomi Indians in Kalamazoo. Keith Bailey This book was written by an individual from Western Michigan University. It would serve as a very interesting tool for teachers. The first eight chapters are told in story form, and then the last four chapters present historical information. There are also questions, posed by the author, for the children to think about. Sherrow, Victoria.

Professor Catherine Rainwater
Hello. Welcome to my CULF 1318: Native American Literature web page. Here you may find out more about the course so that you can decide whether or not you'd like to enroll. Or maybe you're just curious and you're only browsing. That's fine. You'll learn just a little about the history of Native American writing in the United States; you'll find out what the fall 2001 class will be reading and thinking about; and then you'll find out more about me and how I came to teach this course here at St. Edward's University. "Just removing obscuring projections from other persons, let alone the world, is demanding psychological work. Yet any increase in understanding of another person, any appreciation of their true nature, requires the removal of our projections upon them. . . . Removal of projections upon family, friends, and neighbors yields a corresponding increase in self-knowledgesomething never bought cheaply or easily. In a similar way, any hard won increase in knowledge of the outer world demands a removal of our projections on the world and correspondingly liberates us and increases our self-knowledge."Victor Mansfield in Synchronicity, Science, and Soul-Making.

Comments on Native American Literature: In his 1988 book, "Indian Givers", author Jack Weatherford laments the fact that native history and culture are still a "mystery...after five hundred years." The emphasis for past interest in Native Americans was primarily fueled by dime novels and Hollywood films that stereotyped Indians with their focus on white/Indian conflict and the westward march of "manifest destiny." However, we see today that more and more people are beginning to appreciate the numerous contributions American Indians have made to the world...contributions of broad significance in the fields of agriculture, medicine, mathematics, architecture, environmental stewardship, and to the concept of individual expression and freedoms. Today, Native American voices are being heard on the world scene through many literary forms such as fiction, prose, poetry and essays. Native writers are having their works published in the fields of history, science, art, philosophy, politics, religion and the environment. Excellent children’s publications are written by native authors. Buffalo Gap works to provide you...the reader, the student, the educator and the librarian...a full selection of books on Native American history, culture, literature, issues and contemporary life. We offer books by both native and non-native authors. We hope that our selection of books will assist you in learning about America’s native peoples in a way that is enjoyable, accurate and gratifying.

This page addresses the readings and course of study for Week Two of the seminar, which focused on literature.
Native American literature begins with the oral tradition. Creation myths, trickster stories, use of symbols, and rituals of healing will be some of the sub-topics derived from short readings from diverse voices of Indian storytellers and writers. Native writers write out of tribal traditions, and into them. They, like oral storytellers. work within a literary tradition that is at base connected to ritual and beyond that to tribal metaphysics or mysticism. What has been experienced over the ages mystically and communally with individual experiences fitting within that overarching pattern form the basis for tribal aesthetics and therefore of tribal literatures. The rules that define Native literatures are found in canonical Native works such as the Navajo chantways or the sacred texts of the Iroquois, Cherokee, Keres, or Maidu. Each tribe has its canonical works, and it is on the tradition of her own Indian nation that the writer draws. There are some divergences from tribal narrative modes because present day Native cultures and consciousness include Western cultural elements and structures. Assuming they do not seriously dislocate the tradition in which they are embedded, this inclusion makes them vital. If they are really good, they are as vital as the oral tradition, which also informs and reflects contemporary Indian life. The Native literary tradition is dynamic. It pertains to the daily life of the people, as that life reflects the spiritual traditions within their collective life and significance (

A NOTE ABOUT THIS CATALOGUE
This is our third catalogue of Native American Literature and, as in the earlier ones, the books in it are primarily literary works written by Native American authors. In addition, however, we have made a greater effort with this catalogue to include works of significant historical interest written by Native Americans, even when they are not what one would be likely to label "literary." The assumption that Native American writing inherently reflects a merging of distinct cultures, with distinct modes of expression and cultural proclivities, suggests that nonfiction can challenge one's assumptions and reveal new perspectives in much the same way that literature is assumed to do. This catalogue contains a number of noteworthy and rare books in the history of published writing by Native American authors. There is the first autobiography of an Indian writer, William Apes' A Son of the Forest . There is the first travel book written by a Native American writer George Copway's Running Sketches of Men and Places in England, France, Germany, Belgium and Scotland

EAGLE, Dallas Chief. Winter Count.

Course Objectives We will consider various contemporary and traditional works written by Native American women, with special emphasis on socio-cultural contexts of each work. We will pay special attention to issues of gender and identity as they surface in the poetry, fiction, and autobiography we read. We will also consider the extent to which the works bridge traditional and contemporary Native American perspectives, themes and literary styles. Our consideration of cultural contexts and implications of the literature will lead to larger questions and issues regarding both women's studies and Native American studies. Gender and identity often surface most poignantly in the work of women whose lives are marginalized in the mainstream. Our discussions may lead us to ponder as well more general issues connected to the cannon and contextual studies of literature.
