The lesson proceeds to a role-play set in 1887 (using profiles from the Interactive Biographical Dictionary ) in which students impersonate and then evaluate how a variety of Americans viewed the historic stand of the Nez Perce at the time. A document analysis of the Dawes Severalty Act of 1887 sets the stage for evaluating its aftermath. The lesson ends as the class holds two debates. One, set in 1900, asks students to propose alternative legislation to the Dawes Act. The second asks students to act as historians as they evaluate the motives behind passage of the act itself. Materials 6 computer stations with online Internet access. 1 Native American Internet Worksheet for each group. 8 sheets white construction paper pencils and crayons Objectives 1. Students will describe the distinct cultures of Florida's Native Americans before European contact. 2. Students will explain why there are no surviving members of the Native American groups who lived in Florida before the Europeans came. Procedure Students will be divided into six groups. They will explore website (address is given above), and complete one worksheet together. Students will take the information from the worksheet and write one or two paragraphs about their assigned topic. These paragraphs will be edited. The group will then create a picture accurately illustrating their topic on an 18x24 sheet of art paper. They will need to leave enough room at the bottom of the paper for the final draft of their paragraph to be added. These pages will be combined to form a class book. Evaluation 1.
