Lonely Planet Lonely Planet guide to Nauru and the world Order Now
Nauru Culture When the Germans annexed the place in 1888, they had no time for the islanders' dancing and were quick to ban it. Many indigenous cultural practices have followed suit, and one form of culture is now beamed into homes from Television New Zealand through TV aerials or satellite dishes, of which there are plenty. Australian Rules football has almost the status of a religion, and some children are even named after the game's greats. Nauruan islanders are among the wealthiest in the world per head of population, and cars, refrigerators and other mod-cons are commonplace. English and Nauruan, a unique Pacific language with recognisable elements of Melanesian, Polynesian and Micronesian, are spoken. English is the official language used for government and commerce. The clan was the traditional building block of Nauruan life, and today's electoral boundaries roughly represent traditional clan areas. Junk food is widespread, and diseases of affluence - diabetes, obesity and heart disease - are common. Most of the country's food has to be imported, so don't go expecting traditional Pacific feasts. Some pigs and chickens are raised locally, and some tropical fruit and vegetables are grown, especially around Buada Lagoon, but the island is overwhelmingly dependent on imports for its food and water. back to top

Department of Islands Development Industry SOMMAIRE 1-Contexte 5-Les besoins 2-La culture traditionnelle 6-Types de protection requis ... 8-L'évolution actuelle 1.

Nauru
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Nauru is a tiny island republic in the South Pacific Ocean , formerly known as Pleasant Island. Much of its past prosperity derived from phosphate due to the large amount of guano deposits on the island. The phosphate is used as a fertilizer around the world and the majority of it has been exported to Australia. With the exhaustion of the phosphate supplies, Nauru faces an uncertain future. PM Pleads To Nauru: Take Our Aborigines Too
In the wake of Nauru's acceptance of the Tampa refugees, Australian Prime Minister John Howard has struck a new deal with the small island nation to take our Aborigines as well.
The Chaser The deal follows a recent poll which found that the majority of Australians don't think Aborigines should be allowed in Australia. Mr Howard however denied that he was playing politics when he ordered a military evacuation of the entire indigenous population. The Prime Minister said his government was committed to doing everything it could to stop Aborigines from stepping foot on Australian soil, even where the land is "technically" theirs. He said he thought the Nauru deal had struck the right balance between meeting the humanitarian needs of the Aborigines and the populist, electoral needs of the government. Opposition Leader Kim Beazley has supported the deal, to ensure the Labor Party doesn't itself disenchant the bigoted electorate in the lead-up to the federal poll. Both parties believe that Nauru, an island all but stripped bare by phosphate mining, will be a suitable home for our Aborigines, who are used to mines destroying their local environs.
