Civil war follows. Within fifty years or so, nauru had lost its culture, peoplehad lost their private property, and 40% of the population was dead.

HOW HAS HUMAN ACTIVITY AFFECTED THE ISLANDS NEAR THE MARIANAS TROUGH? By Homer Montgomery - 03/11/2001, 0145 Z, R/V Melville, Northwest of Tinian The phrase "Man's Impact On the Environment" is often bantered about. We are well aware that Texas is a leading polluter, that Houston has eclipsed Los Angeles as "America's Dirtiest City," at least as far as air pollution is concerned. The road to riches is frequently paved with a great big mess. Such is the case with the Micronesian island of Nauru ( http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/nytmaps.pl?nauru Nauru is a speck just 18 km in circumference. Historically, Nauru society was composed of twelve tribes with children belonging to their mother's tribe. Each tribe had its own legends. Nauru had a queen. All of the land and all of the reefs were privately owned. Then came the "discovery" of Nauru by whalers. You can probably tell where this story is headed. Whalers move in. Missionaries move in. Guns get spread around. Traditional Nauruan society collapses. Civil war follows.

    Nauru
Introduction Situated in the Pacific, Nauru is one of the smallest countries and smallest republic in the world. Mining and other industries has made this country quite rich, but it has also led to unhindered exploitation of natural resources, culture, and social patterns. Though, tourism is not exactly on the top of activities here, there are some of the finest beaches and incomparable diving and sport fishing activities that makes up for everything else.
What to do There is not much sightseeing to do in this small country. Most of the tourists coming here indulge themselves in diving, sports fishing, and other water sports activities. The country has some of the finest reefs in the world and underwater world is amazing. Entire island can be walked around in a day and if you still have some time to spent then go for playing golf and tennis.

BROADCAST: 23/11/2002 Now to our Friday forum and tonight we're joined by the the expatriate journalist, John Pilger. Mr Pilger is here, partly to promote his latest book "The New Rulers of the World" and to lend his voice to the anti-war movement. "There is no war on terrorism", Mr Pilger writes, "it is the great game speeded up. The difference is the rampant nature of the superpower, ensuring infinite dangers for all of us". After the October 12 terrorist bombings in Bali, he wrote that Australia's close alliance with the US since September 11 and what he called, "the bellicose language of Bush, Blair and Howard" had placed the citizens of their own countries at risk. Evans admits to affair with Kernot
BROADCAST: 04/07/2002 The former foreign minister and deputy Labor leader Gareth Evans has admitted he had an affair with former Democrats leader Cheryl Kernot. The admission contradicts his denial in Parliament in 1998 of a relationship with the woman he helped recruit to the ALP. On a day of frenzied media attention, Cheryl Kernot was neither seen nor heard. The attention wasn't only focused on the two people involved, the media itself has been accused of salaciously delving into the private lives of public office holders. [ AUDIO, TRANSCRIPT

    http://www.micsem.org/pubs/counselor/cultcris.htm
Culture in Crisis: Trends in the Pacific Today Francis X. Hezel, S.J. Micronesian Counselor (May, 1993)
The Cruel Dilemma: Customs or Cash Someone once asked me "What is the most important change that's taking place in the Pacific?" Without any hesitation, I answered, "Money". It is hard to exaggerate the impact of a cash economy on Pacific island societies. We are used to thinking of money as supplementing a subsistence lifestyle, and this is indeed the case throughout the Pacific. But a cash economy stands in sharp contrast with the traditional land-based system that was once the foundation of every society in the Pacific. The Pacific, of course, has known money and its uses for more than a century. Yet the bedrock of the island economy remained the land and the sea and the products they yielded to islanders. When the islands states began going independent in the late 1960s, however, they committed themselves to a Western economic system. Nationhood in the modern world is founded on economic developmentthat is, conversion of the traditional economy to a modern cash economy. Money becomes the measure of growth and the goal is to encourage as many people as possible to participate in the cash economy. Those who do not are called "unemployed" and are thought of as a drag on modernization. Island leaders may urge their people to preserve their own ways, but this has a hollow ring to it. First of all, it is often these same island leaders who are working mightily to bring in logging, mining, tourism, heavy industry, and anything else that might increase the gross national product. And all of these things bring about further changes in traditional lifestyles. Second, a cash economy works its structural changes on the society, regardless of the intentions of those who set the directions. The monetization of a traditional economy is a process with an internal dynamic of its own. Generally speaking, the more money made, the greater the changes.
