Geography
Nebraska is roughly rectangular, except in the northeast and the east where the border is formed by the irregular course of the Missouri River and in the southwest where the state of Colorado cuts out a squared corner. The land rises more or less gradually from 840 ft (256 m) in the east to 5,300 ft (1,615 m) in the west. The great but shallow Platte River, formed in W Nebraska by the junction of the North Platte and the South Platte, flows across the state from west to east to join the Missouri S of Omaha. The Platte and the Missouri, together with their tributaries, give Nebraska all-important water sources that are essential to farming in this agrarian state. Underground water sources are also widely used for irrigation. The river valleys have long provided routes westward, and today the transcontinental railroads and highways follow the valleys. Lincoln , the capital and an important insurance center, and Omaha Hundreds of fresh and alkali lakes in the state attract sportsmen and campers. The pioneers' migration west over the Oregon Trail is commemorated by the Scotts Bluff National Monument and the Chimney Rock National Historic Site. Other points of interest to the traveler include Father Flanagan's Boys Town, near Omaha; the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, near Valentine; and the Homestead National Monument, near Beatrice.

Spring Semester, 2002
Wayne State College
Professor Knotwell At the end of this course you will need to demonstrate a complete understanding of Nebraska from each of the following conceptual perspectives:
  • Water—easily the most influential force in Nebraska’s cultural formation Wealth—Nebraska’s economic nature as a supply region is it’s primary economic influence Cultural Identity—Nebraskan’s have, to varying degrees, bought the notion that there is little value in being a Nebraskan
A complete understanding consists of: Knowing where things in Nebraska are…and why they are there. Knowing the extent to which Nebraskan’s are connected to their place…and why they are not in those places where that is the case Knowing how Nebraskan’s are self-determined and how they “fit” in the larger economic symbiosis You’ll need to come to class, read, listen, take notes, read, ponder, take sides, read, support your positions, read, and “put two and two together.” Classroom: Norfolk Catholic High School, Rm 305

Return to NESEN GRADE LEVEL: Suitable for junior high students and upper level students with lower level skills. SUMMARY: The students will be introduced to the Internet and Virtual Nebraska. They will be directed to go to Nebraska Cities and then to the Fremont site. Fremont is the town closest to the Lyons-Decatur School that is included. They will read information about the Fremont area and locate several features. The lesson is basically a check-off system or short answers. They will notice that the image is not real color, but infrared. STUDENT AND TEACHER BACKGROUND: The media center personnel will help schedule your classes if computers are available. Give media center copies of your lesson and you may need to find out if students access the Internet in the same manner as faculty members. This lesson is not difficult for students or faculty with little or no Internet experience. In our school system students have to have Internet permission, so make sure they are approved to use the Internet. Instruct students that they may go to only Virtual Nebraska sites during class. MATERIALS NEEDED: World Wide Web, Ruler, Nebraska maps.

(Just click on image for larger view) A basic understanding of Nebraska geography is essential to interpreting the maps that are found on these pages. The maps were developed to assist faculty in the Southeast Extension District in developing a strategic plan for adult and youth educational programs in that region of the state. The Southeast Extension District includes 21-counties, and is one of five-Extension Districts in Nebraska. By 1990 Census definition, there were four Metropolitan counties in Nebraska. Three of these, Douglas, Sarpy and Lancaster, are located in the Southeast Extension District. Douglas and Sarpy Counties are included in the Omaha Metropolitan Area, and Lancaster County defines the Lincoln Metropolitan Area. Omaha and Lincoln are the only cities in Nebraska having a population larger than 100,000 persons. The fourth Metro county, Dakota, is part of the Sioux City Metro Area. Together, these four counties are home to just over half of all Nebraskans. Interstate 80 runs the length of the state, and is the only Interstate Highway in Nebraska. The influence of the I-80 corridor will be evident in many of the maps that are found on these pages.

Have you ever been driving along a road you travel often when suddenly you notice something youíve never seen there before? It may have been there for years but you never saw it. Well, thatís what happened to us after attending the Alliance Summer Geography Institute (ASGI) at Dana College in Blair. Our eyes were opened to the world of geography and itís amazing how different things look now! The first part of this eye opening process began in the classroom. Dr. Charles Gildersleeve, the Alliance Coordinator, welcomed us and set the stage for teaching us ìthe whys of where.î Director Harris Payne introduced all the Teacher Consultants (TCís): Deb Anderson, Jennifer Beck, Lonnie Moore, and Steve Callaghan, who in turn got us excited about all the upcoming classes and events. Dr. Clark Archer taught us about the geography of place. We learned about maps and propaganda and why cities develop as they do. Dr. Jeff Peake explained the ìologiesî to us - meteorology, geomorphology, and conservation. Dr. Garth Myers took us on a safari through Eastern Africa and shared his first hand knowledge of its people, their customs, and the land. Next we journeyed to Belize with Dr. Phil Reeder and visited ancient ruins and caves with bats, snakes, and artifacts.
Our illustrious TCís presented many memorable lessons with very active participation. In Debís lesson on Ellis Island, we assumed immigrant roles, rode on a ship almost getting seasick, and were filled with awe at the first sighting of the Statue of Liberty. We will never forget this, especially those of us rejected from entering America due to our questionable mental health. Lonnieís Orienteering activity had teachers racing through the campus searching for hidden clues to answer the mapís riddle. The importance of reading maps and using a compass quickly became evident. Steve led us around downtown Omaha as we learned about the Central Business District and the growth of Omaha. We toured the Western Heritage Museumís TransMississippi Exposition, too. Jen showed us how to make topography maps come alive by using styrofoam. We all appreciated her ìleaksî and ìdribblesî of important information to study for our final test.
