epal, home to Mount Everest, is dominated by the world's most imposing mountains. Although the country is relatively small (147,181 square kilometers), 80 percent of its territory is occupied by the dramatic peaks of the Himalayas. Nepal was closed to foreign visitors until1951, a situation which contributed greatly to its mystique in the west. This small, hospitable country has since become an exceptionally popular destination for travelers, whether they are in search of climbing challenges or spiritual enlightenment. Nepal can be divided into three geographical regions, each stretching from east to west across the country. The southernmost strip of land, the Terai, is bordered to the north by Himalayan foothills and to the south by the Ganges River. The area was originally covered with tropical vegetation, but has been almost completely converted to agricultural production. The Terai is now the breadbasket of Nepal and is covered with farms.

About Nepal
Isolated from the world until 1951, Nepal has remained the greatest wonder to travelers around the globe. To many the mystic of Nepal lies within the mountains along its northern border, the Himalaya's, but to others this mystic is created from the history, cultural diversity, and arts representing over 3,000 years of a forbidden kingdom. Along the northern border of Nepal the Himalaya's rise up over 25,000 feet dwarfing everything in site. For thousands of years these mountains have represented gods to Buddhists as they are unimaginable. To travelers these mountains challenge the respect owed to nature as their formation seems far more amazing than man's greatest creations. While the Himalaya's are awesome, the history, culture, and arts of Nepal are spectacular. Throughout thousands of years Nepal has represented the cultural center between India and China where cultures, religions and travelers meshed. This catalyst formed by Nepal's geographic location has made Nepal one of the world's premier destinations to view the treasures of history including seven world heritage sites found in the Kathmandu Valley alone.
History
Ironically, as Nepal has only recently been opened to foreigners, the history of Nepal is founded on the immigration of people from neighboring India and China. These immigrants not only brought with them traditions, arts, religions and languages, but ultimately various styles of government. While these arts and traditions contributed to the regions history it has been the changes in government which have shaped it.

Nepal is a sovereign independent kingdom which lies between 80 degree 4' and 88 degree 12' east longitude and 26 degree 12' - 30 degree 27' north latitude. The Tibetan autonomous region of china and on the east, west and south bound the country on the north by India. East-west length of e country is 880 km. and its breadth varies from 144 to 240 km North South. It lies in the Temperate Zone with an added Advantage of extreme altitude. The Terai region and some deep valleys are seldom less than three thousand feet above sea level. The extreme heats in the south the extreme cold in the Khumbu region in Sagarmatha/ Chomolangma/ Everest ads an interesting fact. Though it is severely cold in winter the blue clear sky and sunny days compensate it. All seasons are good for traveling in Nepal having their own unique charm.

At latitudes 26 and 30 degrees north and longitudes 80 and 88 degrees east, Nepal is topographically divided into three regions: the Himalaya to the north, the hills consisting of the Mahabharat range and the Churia Hills, and the Terai to the south. Elevations are varied in the kingdom. The highest point is Mt. Everest (8848 m) in the north and the lowest point (70 meters above sea level) is located at Kechana Kalan of Jhapa District. Altitude increases as you travel south to north To the north temperatures are below - 40 degrees Celsius and in the Terai, temperatures rise to 40 degrees Celsius in the summer. During June, July and August, the kingdom is influenced by monsoon clouds. The Himalaya
The Himalayan range makes up the northern border of the country and represents 16% of the total land area of Nepal. Peaks like Mt. Everest (8848 m), Kanchenjunga (8598 m), and Dhaulagiri (8137 m) are found here and sparse vegetation is found up to 4500 m. Some of Nepal's most beautiful animal and plant life are also found here. Although rare, the snow leopard and danphe bird are much talked about sights among visitors. The people in this region produce and sell cheese besides working as porters and guides. Many also trade with Tibet and travel across the border to sell their goods.

  • Review the meaning of location, place, relationship, and/or movement (See "Background Information for Teachers," ). Have students give examples of each theme in relation to your town and state. Brainstorm a list of facts about Nepal. Encourage students to consider facts that illustrate the theme or themes you would like to emphasize. After reading "Snapshot of Nepal," ask students to add to your initial list.
  • As a class, brainstorm a list of facts about Nepal. Encourage students to consider the categories touched on in "Snapshot..." by asking "What about the people? What about the land?" and so on. Categorize the facts. After reading "Snapshot," ask students to correct or add to their facts. Alternatively, post sheets of newsprint around the room labeled with such categories as "Religion," "Geography," "Links to the U.S." and so on. Give students ten minutes to wander around jotting down any information they know in the appropriate categories. (Note: This can also be used as a review activity at the end of the unit.)
  • Have students skim the "Think about It" questions before reading "Snapshot." Work individually, in pairs, or as a group to respond to the questions.
