Nevada State College (under construction) The Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) started in 1979 at the National Science Foundation (NSF) when five states received planning grants to develop strategies to build their research infrastructures. The goal of EPSCoR is to stimulate sustainable improvements in the quality of academic science and technology infrastructure of eligible states. Toward that end, individual research components are expected to become “self-supporting” (supported by sources other than EPSCoR). In 1985, Nevada received its first planning grant and received its first infrastructure award in 1986. Since that time, several other agencies over the years have developed EPSCoR or EPSCoR-like programs. These include the Department of Energy (DOE) , Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) , United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) , Department of Defense (DOD) , National Aeronautical and Space Agency (NASA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) . Nevada has received over $36 million from EPSCoR programs (table 1). Many of these programs have required cost sharing from the state and the University and Community College System of Nevada (UCCSN) institutions.

Other Majors "Among all the riches a nation may possess, its people - its human resources, its human capital - is the most important. The value of this human resource depends not on size, however, but on the occupational and intellectual skills its members possess. If our country is to maintain a world-class standard of living, it must hold its own in world marketplace competition. Preparing the world-class worker an individual who is highly educated, technologically skilled, highly productive, and as a result, earns high wages is a major goal of workforce education." (Gray & Herr, 1998) However, these "world-class workers" will require "world-class teachers" to prepare them for the challenges of the 21st century. The Workforce Education Program at UNLV is dedicated to preparing occupational teachers who can provide students of all ages and backgrounds with real-life reaming experiences, stimulate student motivation through interest and relevancy, and develop students' competence and confidence in their abilities as they prepare to become productive citizens.
