Sierra Nevada Geography
One of the things that makes the Sierra Nevada so unique is its diverse and complex geography, ranging from pastoral rolling oak dotted foothills to rugged alpine peaks; from barren desert to forests of towering sequoias; from the warm, dry lowlands to winter passes clogged with up to 30 feet of snow. This page contains links to lists, charts and maps of some of the many geographic features of the range, including elements of the physical landscape, climate and the human landscape. This list is not exhaustive in any way, and only reflects topics of interest to the author. Most of maps have both small (50Kb) and large (100Kb) versions. If you have a broadband connection, selecting "Large Images" from the "Settings" menu (at left) will present you with larger, clearer images.

University of nevada geography professor 'sleuths' the sense of placein murder mysteries. It was on a flight returning from Russia
http://www.unr.edu/nevadanews/vol4no3.html
University of Nevada geography professor 'sleuths' the sense of place in murder mysteries It was on a flight returning from Russia in 1982 that the idea first came to University of Nevada, Reno geography professor Gary Hausladen. Hausladen was enjoying Martin Cruz Smith's best-selling novel "Gorky Park". In particular, he was amazed at how well the novelist captured so many different aspects of living in Moscow: its people, the important landmarks, the feeling of being a citizen in a communist country. "I was fascinated by Martin Cruz Smith's ability to convey so vividly and accurately a sense of Moscow and the Soviet society I thought I knew so well, after having lived there for half a year with my wife and children," Hausladen said. From that plane flight were planted seeds for a book, one examining the sense of place in a favorite genre of readers: the murder mystery. Over the next few years, Hausladen studied police procedurals, and combed hundreds of book bins in used book stores throughout the country. The result is Hausladen's new book, "Places for Dead Bodies" (2000, University of Texas Press, 212 pages). The book focuses on how geography, particularly sense of place, is used to further the goals of literature to produce an effective and enthralling plot. What: Gary Hausladen will hold a book signing of his new book, Places for Dead Bodies.
