Nevada History The second NEVADA (BB-36) was laid down 4 November l912 by the Fore River Shipbuilding Co., Quyncy, Mass.; launched 11 July 1914; sponsored by Miss Eleanor Anne Seibert, niece of Governor Tasker L. Oddie of Nevada and descendant of Secretary of the Navy Benjamin Stoddert; and commissioned 11 March 1916, Capt. William B. Sims in command. NEVADA served in both Atla~tic and Pacific Fleets in the period between the wars. In September 1922 she represented the United States in Rio de Janeiro for the Centennial of Brazilian Independence. From July to September 1926, she participated in the U.S. Fleet's goodwill cruise to Australia and New Zealand, which demonstrated to our friends down under, and to the Japanese, our ability to make a selfsupported cruise to a distance equal to that to Japan. Modernized at Norfolk Naval Shipyard between August 1927 and January 1930, NEVADA served in the Pacific Fleet for the next decade. On 7 December 1941, NEVADA was moored singly off Ford Island, and had a freedom of maneuver denied the other 8 battleships present during the attack. As her gunners opened fire and her engineers got up steam, she was struck by one torpedo and two, possibly three, bombs from the Japanese attackers, but was able to get underway. While attempting to leave harbor she was struck again. Fearing she might sink in the channel, blocking it, she was beached at Hospital Point. Gutted forward, she lost 60 killed and 109 wounded. Refloated 12 February 1942, NEVADA repaired at Pearl Harbor and Puget Sound Navy Yard, then sailed for Alaska where she provided fire support for the capture of Attu 11 to 18 May. In June she sailed for further modernization at Norfolk Navy Yard, and in April 1944 reached British waters to prepare for the Normandy Invasion. In action from 6 to 17 June, and again 25 June, her mighty guns pounded not only permanent shore defenses on the Cherbourg Peninsula, but ranged as far as 17 miles inland, breaking up German concentrations and counterattacks. Shore batteries straddled her 27 times, but failed to diminish her accurate fire.

Virginia City, Nevada, evokes an image much like the Dodge Durango. Steeped in history and the legendary engineering exploits of spirited men and women, Virginia City came of age as wide-eyed miners, spurred by California's 1849 Gold Rush, scoured the remote hills and canyons of the West. In 1858, astride the mountain range east of Washoe Valley, a rush ignited from the discovery of silver-rich, gold bearing ore at a site nicknamed "Virginia." Within a decade, a city emerged, 11,000 people strong.
Gold Hill Hotel dates to 1859. Revitalized with good taste, hotel offers overnight lodging, fine dining and a lively historic bar replete with local color and lore. While California mining of that period was largely placer and hydraulic claims, the extreme challenges of Virginia City's underground mines attracted world-class engineers and geologists. The innovation of these 19th Century technologists, matched by the hard working Comstock Lode miners, helped wrench 700,000 tons of ore a year from the slopes and canyons east of 7,864 foot high Mt. Davidson. So rich was the area that President Abraham Lincoln hastily granted statehood to Nevada in 1864. As the Civil War spent lives and resources, the Comstock filled the Union's coffers with vitally needed funding.

    Historical Note:
    Trick or treat . . .
On Halloween in 1864, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Nevada the 36th state in the Union. Some people say it was a trick of Lincoln's to get a new unionist state just in time for his re-election in November. Others say he did it for a treat to get more financing for the Civil War by tapping into Nevada's newly discovered Silver mines. Whether a trick or a treat, Nevada's statehood made a huge difference in the country. It provided the one vote necessary to ratify the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery from United States forever.

Douglas County has been the most consistently Republican county in Nevada history. Ironically, when the Nevada territorial legislature created Douglas County in November 1861, it was named for one of the great Democrats of the era, Stephen Arnold Douglas. G o d B l e s s A m e r i c a Laughlin, Nevada The Tri-State Area remained pretty much in limbo until the mid-1960's when Don Laughlin, a native Midwesterner fresh from a successful 10-year gaming venture in Las Vegas, flew over the area in his private plane in 1964. Below him were piles of hot desolate sand, 11-year old Davis Dam, a sparsely populated town named Bullhead City, Arizona and a stretch of the Colorado River on the Nevada side called South Pointe. The only structure he could see below him was a boarded-up building at the end of a dirt road. Don Laughlin bought that stretch of property in 1966, which became the 28-story, 1,405 room Riverside Resort Hotel and Casino - the beginning of one of the fastest-growing communities and gaming resorts in Nevada today. In 1987, Don Laughlin paid $3.5 million for the construction of a bridge over the Colorado River, just south of Davis Dam, providing one of three links to Laughlin's neighbors: Bullhead City Fort Mojave and Mohave Valley Other casinos soon joined Don Laughlin's quest to make the area a mecca for gamblers and water enthusiasts to come for an inexpensive resort vacation.

The gold and silver rush also gave birth to the oldest continually operating labor organization in Nevada, the Washoe Typographical Union, now part of Communications Workers of America Local 9413 , which counts the editor of this site among its members. The original 1863 charter was destroyed by the Great Virginia City Fire of 1875 and replaced in 1876. CWA 9413 proudly maintains that charter and the venerable union's individual identity.
