Press Releases
New Hampshire Student Loan Default Rate Lowest in the Nation

(Concord, N.H.) The New Hampshire Higher Education Assistance Foundation (NHHEAF), the state’s student loan guarantor, has again recorded a decline in its student loan default rate earning it the distinction of being the lowest in the nation. Cohort default rate figures released this week by the U.S. Department of Education show that NHHEAF’s default rate dropped to 1.4% for FY 2000 while the national rate remained at a historically low level of 5.9%.
Drouin further stated that, “NHHEAF’s overall default prevention activities translate into substantial savings for taxpayers.” For year-to-date, NHHEAF averted 83% of $109.5 million in pre-claims received, resulting in $90.6 million in saved loans. According to Christine Williams, Director of the NHHEAF Network’s Claims and Recoveries Department, “attaining the lowest-in-the-nation cohort default rate is largely attributed to the diligent and concentrated efforts of our default aversion staff. If a student defaults on his/her loan, then they cannot receive further financial aid. In addition, his/her credit rating can suffer and tax refunds and wages can be offset to cover the debt. The consequences are serious.” “NHHEAF invests significant resources to spare student and parent borrowers the severe consequences of default,” added Drouin. “Because our default prevention success protects the integrity of the student loan program and benefits all program participants, the NHHEAF Network will continue to explore and invest in new and improved ways to help education loan borrowers successfully repay their higher education debt.”

Press Releases
On-Line Parent Plus Loan Applications Now Available From NHHEAF Network

(Concord, N.H.) The New Hampshire Higher Education Loan Corporation (NHHELCO), a New Hampshire Higher Education Assistance Foundation (NHHEAF) Network organization, announces federal parent PLUS Loans are now available utilizing an on-line loan application process. In June, the NHHEAF Network introduced the on-line process for students who apply for federal Stafford loans. Now both students and parents can take advantage of the web-based Borrower Portal services available via the NHHEAF Network website (www.nhheaf.org).
"The on-line functionality enables parents and students to electronically sign the application from any location using their FAFSA e-PIN and greatly expedites the turnaround time for completing the application process," explains Diane Kelly, Marketing Director for the NHHEAF Network. Parents also receive an instant credit decision and may check the status of their loan on-line at their convenience. The NHHEAF Network is working closely with the postsecondary education institutions in the state to ensure the smooth implementation of the web-based process. To allow schools to maintain control over the application process, borrowers are unable to complete their application until the school has certified loan eligibility. Borrowers who have completed an on-line borrower profile on the NHHEAF Network website are notified via e-mail when their loans are certified.
