New Blueprint For School Facilities Finance Urged By State Legislative Analyst's Office
NSBN was pleased to talk with Marianne O'Malley, Principal Fiscal and Policy Analyst for the State's LAO, who reminded us of the dysfunctional nature of the current school facility finance system, what it's doing to school facilities throughout the state of California and fleshes out the long-term and lasting effects it is having, not merely on the financial front, but on the educational front as well.
Lou Smith, Chief Operating Officer for the San Diego Unified School District talks to NSBN about the evolving nature of school facilities construction, why it is no longer simply about construction and what the state can do to help other districts use this model to effectively change the way they envision, design and build schools. The availability of an increasing number of antiretroviral agents and the rapid evolution of new information has introduced substantial complexity into treatment regimens for persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In 1996, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation convened the Panel on Clinical Practices for the Treatment of HIV to develop guidelines for clinical management of HIV-Infected adults and adolescents. Wyckoff's Public Schools are among the best in Bergen County. There are four elementary schools servicing kindergarten through grade five. Enrollment in these schools ranges from 331 to 438 students, with an average class size of approximately 22. The elementary schools are Calvin Coolidge, Abraham Lincoln, Sicomac and George Washington. Dwight D. Eisenhower, the middle school, houses grades six, seven and eight and has an enrollment of approximately 724 students. The average class size is about 24. Click here for the Wyckoff School System homepage The Board of Education, administration and faculty believe that the schools exist for the benefit of each student regardless of his or her capacity for learning, that each student has a unique set of needs which must be met, and that it is the purpose of the schools to help each student reach his or her potential intellectually, socially and emotionally. Each school offers a variety of academic, cultural, aesthetic, enrichment and remedial programs to meet the diverse needs of the students. Among these are: academically gifted and talented program, talented art program, guidance services from pre-school screening through high school orientation, library/media center services, resource center instruction, special education classes for students with special needs, and speech/language therapy. Each school has a computer room which provides opportunities for students to become familiar with the use of computers. For the past several years the emphasis for curriculum and instruction in the Wyckoff Schools has been on learning content more through critical thinking and problem solving strategies than through role learning of facts. Students have increasingly been required to apply and demonstrate what they know. Through performance tasks, demonstrations and portfolios, students show they can apply what they have learned.
