New Mexico Museum of Space History
STARLAB
STARLAB is a portable planetarium made by Learning Technologies, Inc. and was designed to be used by classroom teachers with little or no background in astronomy. In addition to an accurate starfield, STARLAB's projector is capable of producing other images such as: African, Native American, and Greek mythology, a world map, and a biology cell among others. With STARLAB, the teaching possibilities are endless.
The idea of a museum sharing STARLAB with schools is not a new idea. Approximately ten museums throughout the country are involved in similar programs where teachers receive training on how to use STARLAB.
Through a grant from the New York Hall of Science, the New Mexico Museum of Space History Education Department introduced a teacher training program with STARLAB in 1995.
Since that time, the museum's education staff has added two additional STARLABS to their portable planetarium program.
Teachers can access STARLAB two ways:
  • A STARLAB Outreach Program
    Becoming a trained STARLAB agent
The New STARLAB Program:
Yes, the program can be classified as new. We have offered the Basic STARLAB program over the past ten years and we will continue to do so. The basic training is a twelve hour workshop which teaches the operation, maintenance and functions of the STARLAB. The second part of the workshop is learning lessons which teach the night sky, why the moon goes through phases and the reason for the seasons.

A PASSLE OF POETS
Vietnam, Again, and New McGarrity
by Lewis MacAdams

Blue Press, San Francisco by Anne MacNaughton This brief chapbook records the experience of one poet/eco-activist and the life of one urban riverscape. The writer, from the plains of north Texas, asks that we see him as "one who called himself a country boy, yet wrung his song out of the city." And he is concerned with the shape and environment of his own life as well as that of the mostly unreconstructed drainage ditch called the Los Angeles River: the technological landscape, the hydroengineered landscape, the political landscape, and the dirt, shrubs and sky landscape. Whether it's ugly or beautiful,
poisoned and imprisoned,
or flooding fresh and free, the Los Angeles River
will always flow and lovers will always walk along its banks holding hands; and people who have no homes will make it their homes, washing their ragged garments in the concrete inverts

    20. New Mexico State University Students Complete Colonias Survey
Finance Authority and the North American Development Bank, the four students most of them from new mexico State’s geography department collected
    http://www.nmsu.edu/~ucomm/Releases/2001/October2001/survey1001.html
New Mexico State University students complete colonias survey
Four New Mexico State University students have completed the first thorough survey of colonias in New Mexico, said Esperanza Holguin, a program specialist for the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. Holguin said New Mexico does not have a central repository of information about colonias. Prior to this survey only a limited amount of information about the communities was available in the state. For example, when she began work for HUD in 1999, she was told there were 57 colonias in the 10-county area that HUD covers, but after studying county records she found there were 137. That number has since increased to 141, she said. In a project funded last year by the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority and the North American Development Bank, the four students most of them from New Mexico State’s geography department collected historical, demographic, economic, geographic and physical information about 137 colonias. Because they performed the work for HUD’s colonias initiative, they surveyed only 10 counties in an area stretching 150 miles from the United States-Mexico border, Holguin said. In order of those designating the most colonias to those listing the least, the counties are: Dona Ana, 35 colonias; Catron, 34 colonias; Grant, 33; Otero, 16; Hidalgo, 7; Luna, 5; Eddy, 2; and one colonia each for Sierra, Chavez and Socorro counties.
