The Regions in Brief North-Central New Mexico The most highly populated and well-traveled area of the state, north-central New Mexico roughly includes the cities of Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Taos. It is also the economic center of New Mexico. In this portion of the state, lush mountains, incredibly, seem to rise directly out of the parched plateaus that have made New Mexico's landscape famous. Temperatures are generally lower in this area than they are in the rest of the state, and skiing is one of the most popular winter activities in both Santa Fe and Taos. Northeastern New Mexico Covering the area north of Interstate 40 and east of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, northeastern New Mexico is prairie land once inhabited or visited by some of the West's most legendary gunslingers. Towns to visit for a bit of Wild West history are Cimarron and Las Vegas. The northeastern portion of the state also includes attractions such as Fort Union National Monument, a portion of the Santa Fe Trail, Kiowa National Grasslands, and Capulin Volcano National Monument. Due to its abundance of state parks and wildlife reserves, as well as the fact that it borders the ski resort towns of Angel Fire, Taos, Red River, and Santa Fe, this region is an excellent area for sports enthusiasts.

Water Line (the agency newsletter) Last Modified: 12/07/2001 Regions, State, Plan for Water Framework State Water Plan in Progress I nterstate Stream Commission (ISC) staff and contractors have begun work on the Framework State Water Plan, to identify issues and provide a blueprint for a New Mexico State Water Plan. The Framework State Water Plan will set out what data and technical evaluations of New Mexico's water resources are needed for planning purposes. It is funded with $600,000 from severance tax bond funds appropriated to the Office of the State Engineer (OSE) in 1998. Additional appropriations to complete the program will be sought from the 2002 legislature. Contracts are already out for the first two tasks of the Framework State Water Plan:
  • An assessment of ground and surface water resources statewide will identify and prioritize water-resource investigations needed for water management. It will include water budgets for New Mexico's major river basins and aquifers and an electronic atlas of the state's water resources. The assessment will also identify opportunities to substitute undeveloped sustainable surface water sources in uses that presently rely on mined groundwater. The steps that must be taken and the funding needed to take advantage of these opportunities will be outlined.

Fossils of ancient marine life and forests include vast limestone beds and coal deposits. The Northeast —In New York and New England, the Appalachian highlands dissolve into such highlands as the Adirondacks, the Catskills and White Mountains. This is a land of ancient igneous and metamorphic rocks that was bulldozed by Ice Age glaciers. Except for western New York, very few fossils are found here.

Select an area in the map or in the links below to find specific information about regional programs, tribal operations, and more. State Pesticide Regulatory Agencies
These state agencies can help you determine if a pesticide is registered for use in your state, tell you about the specific rules and regulations governing pesticide use in your state, advise if your state requires notification or postings prior to pesticide applications, register a complaint concerning a pesticide misapplication, and also give you information about how to become a certified pesticide applicator. Tribal Pesticide Programs
