U.S. Department of Energy Issued on October 12, 1998
Secretary Richardson Announces New Effort
with New Mexico Tech to Assist Gas
Producers in New Mexico
Research Would Analyze Natural Fractures in Gas Formations
And Identify Most Promising Methods for Boosting Production The San Juan Basin, the nation's 2nd most prolific gas formation in the United States, is the focus of the new DOE project with New Mexico Tech. E nergy Secretary Bill Richardson, speaking to oil and gas producers in New Mexico, today announced a new research project with the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology that could help remove one of the major obstacles the producers face in working the State's natural gas fields. Richardson said that the Department of Energy is awarding a $1.5 million contract to the university's Department of Petroleum and Chemical Engineering in Socorro to analyze data from at least 500 New Mexico gas wells and determine the best way to boost gas production from some of the State's most difficult geologic formations. Like many gas-bearing regions especially in the Western United States, the dense underground rock formations in New Mexico have been fractured over the eons by natural geologic stresses. These ribbon-thin fractures often work to the producer's advantage by creating channels for natural gas to flow through the rock formation to production wells. But fractures can also cause problems. If wells are not properly positioned, fractures can drain gas in irregular, elongated patterns and effectively seal off major sections of the reservoir, reducing the overall amount of gas that can be produced.
