Substance use disorders
Mental and behavioural disorders resulting from psychoactive substance use include disorders caused by the use of alcohol, opioids such as opium or heroin, cannabinoids such as marijuana, sedatives and hypnotics, cocaine, other stimulants, hallucinogens, tobacco and volatile solvents. The conditions include intoxication, harmful use, dependence and psychotic disorders. Harmful use is diagnosed when damage has been caused to physical or mental health. Dependence syndrome involves a strong desire to take the substance, difficulty in controlling use, a physiological withdrawal state, tolerance, neglect of alternative pleasures and interests, and persistence of use despite harm to oneself and others. Though the use of substances (along with their associated disorders) varies from region to region, tobacco and alcohol are the substances that are used most widely in the world as a whole and that have the most serious public health consequences. In addition to the social and behavioural factors associated with the onset of tobacco use, a clear dependence on nicotine is found in the majority of chronic smokers. This dependence prevents these individuals from giving up tobacco use and staying away from it.

    THE CUISINE OF MEXICO
Karen Hursh Graber Her Bio Her Home Page
    Introduction
Mexico presents a different face to each person that meets her. Traveling through the country is an experience unique to the individual, even to people on the same journey, whether they be tourists spending a week at an ultra-modern beach resort or ethnologists visiting remote indigenous villages. Each of us has a personnal framework through which to view an unfamiliar place or revisit a favorite spot. As a food writer and cooking teacher, one of my own focuses while traveling is seeking out the distinct cuisine of each region I visit, exploring both everyday and ritual foods and beverages. I naturally gravitate toward the local markets, restaurants and food stalls, and living in Mexico for several years has given me plenty of opportunity to do so. The culinary practices of a particular area are nearly always a reflection of its history, cultural and religious orientation, and natural resources. Historian Jeffery M. Pilcher, in

    New and Improved Pronunciations!
    By Edgar Martín del Campo
This site is best viewed with a computer. Blessed Be and Biénvenidos to my Mesoamerican Page! The more than 400 Prehispanic works here span from the northwestern regions of Mexico to southern Panama and over three thousand years of civilization in Mexico and Central America. These links will direct you to pages containing downloadable images with my own commentary. Since many of these names may be new, I have set up .WAV files, linked by their corresponding text names, to help with pronunciation. With regards of the images, feel free to download 'em all, but remember that since these are original graphics, I own the rights. Please be discreet in distributing the images and include where they came from.
Each thumbnail image will bring up its enlarged version, in conventional .JPG format. These images were scanned from camcorder tapes recorded in 1993, 1995, 1997, and 1998. I have also scanned from photos taken during 1992, 2000, and 2001. The following abbreviations represent the sites I recorded at:
