Research
Developmental and Cell Biology
Research is directed towards understanding cell motility and the nuclear and cytoskeletal aspects of fertilization. Pronuclear development is a pivotal period during fertilization, because the successful genetic reactivation of the dormant sperm nucleus and maternal chromatin by egg cytoplasm is essential for bipartental embryonic development. One project of the lab is to use an in vitro nuclear system to elucidate the factors regulating male pronuclear development at the cellular and molecular levels. Another area of research analyzes the role of the cytoskeleton in the fertilization process. These projects utilize fluorescence microscopy, video microscopy, and biochemical techniques. The object of these investigations is to gain an understanding of the nucleocytoplasmic interactions in cells.

Kudos - 2002 CHARLES A. DUKES AWARD WINNERS The Charles A. Dukes award, named after Charles A. Dukes T’29, the first director of Alumni Affairs and a long-time Duke volunteer, was established in 1982 to recognize individuals for outstanding volunteer service. Each year, nominations are submitted by staff of the Alumni Affairs and Annual Fund offices and approved by their respective boards. These volunteers do not just give their time to Duke they are devoted. They are the ones who continually think of Duke as a special part of their lives and strive to continue the tradition of excellence for generations to come. The following alumni were awarded this prestigious award for their efforts in 2001-2002. When asked why they serve, the common answer seemed to be that they wanted to give back to Duke because it had played such a major role in their lives. Charles A. Dukes

May 1, 2000
The Internet is rapidly evolving into a global medium (Thompson, ). As more schools and universities from around the world enter this marketplace, educational services will be offered increasingly across international borders. The prospect is alluring. Students studying Spanish in San Francisco will be able to learn from an instructor living in Madrid. Historians interested in the Incan empire will be able to correspond with Peruvian professors working in Cuzco. Prospective entrepreneurs in Moscow will be able to study under economics professors based at Stanford or Harvard. What are the implications of transnational education, where the instructor is in one nation and the students are in another? And in particular, what issues will transnational educators face in the day-to-day conduct of their enterprise? This article surveys a number of these issues and points to the impact they will have on distance learning policy. Language One obvious issue is language. Monolingual students living in North America will not be able to converse in Spanish, Incan, or Greek. And professors living in those nations are unlikely to be fluent in English, even if it is the

Project Leader(s): Charlene Heintz - Don Bouchard Location(s): New York
A plethora of research exists that supports the notion that parental involvement/engagement is one of the most important arenas where substantial, deep work must be done by urban school reformers seeking to transform failing schools. Research shows that when educators build quality relationships among parents and community stakeholders and focus on students' educational outcomes, failing schools can be transformed. Project Effects: The work of the LAB with CPAC will lead to the following:
  • Improved communication and information sharing citywide
  • A leadership model for parental involvement/engagement
  • A case study about the implementation of the leadership model.
Project relationships to current educational thinking, research and practice: The work of the LAB with the New York City School Chancellor's Parent Advisory Council (CPAC) focuses on building strong coalitions of parents who are knowledgeable and active partners with the New York City Board of Education. The work with CPAC has evolved around building their capacity as a citywide parental involvement mechanism, which has educational and political relevance and credibility. Their capacity to provide large-scale leadership across the city regarding high priority mandates and initiatives has been at the heart of this work. The LAB's involvement has been dynamic and research-based involving coaching, mentoring, facilitation and training for CPAC members and Central Board staff. The LAB is documenting how the largest public school system in the region is building and supporting internal and external structures to increase meaningful parental involvement and community engagement.

Organizations Supporting Staff Development:
Many of the United States provide some form of intermediate service centers to support educators who are working on state reform initiatives. In Illinois these are called Regional Offices of Education. In Michigan these are called Intermediate School Districts. In that case, ISDs have boundaries that overlap regular school districts and have their own taxing authority. In New York and Colorado these agencies are called BOCES which stands for Board of Cooperative Educational Services. Texas has 20 Education Service Center Regions. If you don't know how to access assistance from these agencies, click here to link to the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) which can connect you to the state board of education in your state. You should be able to find out there if such agencies are in your state. The only USA exception is Hawaii which has one school district for the entire state and so, the state provides the assistance directly.
In some countries, like Canada, the assistance for school improvement comes from provincial "ministries" of education. In other countries, like Singapore and Great Britain, the Ministry of Education is for the whole nation.
