THE ROLE OF EDUCATION IN DEVELOPMENT
Course Description:
Investment in education has long been seen as a key factor in development, linked to economic growth, poverty reduction, improvements in health, and an information revolution. Yet persistent social inequalities and economic crises along with the equity and quality problems associated with decades of educational expansion and reform have caused questions to be raised about this view. This course examines the theoretical and empirical arguments surrounding these debates, in particular, those concerning the relation of education to growth, poverty, inequality, development, globalization, and other key issues. The course looks at the roles of various actors in the education and development process, including national governments, international financial institutions and agencies, NGOs, and other civil society organizations.

Charged with transferring individual school budgets from a central office to the 12 individual schools, the Union City, N.J., Board of Education relies on FileMaker Pro to power the flow of data from input to reports. As a result, principals and administrators get hands-on control of many functions and the district's budget is completed on time in a state-approved format.
    Union City Board of Education
Union City, New Jersey, sits in the shadow of New York City, its neighbor across the Hudson River. But the Union City Board of Education, which serves nearly 10,000 students in 12 schools with 1,500 faculty and non-instructional employees, takes a back seat to no one in its collection, management and analysis of data, thanks to FileMaker Pro, the award-winning database from FileMaker, and the hard work of people inside the system, as well as independent FileMaker developers.
That shift from paper to pixels came about in large measure because of the state demands, said Anthony Dragona, business administrator for the Union City Board of Education.
