10 FAQ's About New York's Libraries Why are libraries so important? Information stored in our libraries is a link to a past we can no longer see and a bridge to a future we have yet to address. We use our libraries to study our culture's past and gather information to make intelligent, personal choices. Although it takes a great deal of money to maintain and operate a library, the information within it is free. Libraries represent the most democratic of our institutions, giving the greatest and the least of us alike access to the information we need- when we need it. In our hurried, information-loaded lives, libraries are needed also to help us make sense of that information. Why is the New York Library Association reaching out to New York's citizens and lawmakers? And why now? We are in an information revolution and libraries are on the front line. As the amount of information increases, so does the demand for library services to help analyze, evaluate, and manage that information. In all, there are 5,796 school libraries, 1,103 public library buildings, 271 college and university libraries, and 1800 special libraries in New York State. Each of these libraries is a storehouse of information and knowledge available to anyone who wants it. Yet, libraries do not sell knowledge, nor do they offer shares on Wall Street. Other than receiving support from patrons and from governments, libraries have no way of raising money needed to operate as "information stores." Furthermore, though the

New York's libraries need help.
The new century brings challenges to our libraries. But State funding has not kept pace, and local budgets are stretched to the limits. New York's public libraries need more state dollars for;
  • A network of databases, catalogs, and other electronic materials that connects even the smallest and most remote local library to collections hundreds of miles away.
  • Extended hours for urban and rural libraries.
  • Up-to-date collections, both print and digital.
  • Renovation and modernization of library buildings.
  • Family literacy and reading programs.
New York's libraries are falling behind.
  • Half are over 60 years old and need modernization.
  • More than one million New Yorkers have no local library.
  • More than 400 public libraries do not have adequate funding to provide even the most basic services.
  • Databases and other electronic materials cost local public libraries 25 times more than if they were purchased at a statewide level.
  • Public libraries in 63 urban communities are unable to fulfill their traditional role as gateway to the "American Dream" for millions of newly arrived immigrants.

Our Bookshop
We now maintain a rather large bookshop in Ashokan, N.Y. (on Rt.28) 9 miles west of NYS Thruway exit 19 (Kingston). There are about 70,000 uncatalogued books and records in some dozen rooms and arranged in over 100 categories (actually, there's about a mile of shelving ...) The books are different from those in our catalogs; some are in the shop because they are priced too low to be catalogued, and some are there not because they are inexpensive, but because they are difficult to describe. If you're not too far away, we think you'll find it worth the trip. Open SEVEN DAYS from 10 AM to 5 PM. Browse By Category (first edition)
