Troy, New York is enhancing its innovative Connected Kids Project, an online database of the city's youth services, thanks to a grant provided by 3Com's Urban Challenge program. The grant will provide the Connected Kids project with compelling multimedia resources to seize the imaginations of youth and families that have limited access to digital information technology.
Using the 3Com Urban Challenge grant award, Troy Mayor Mark Pattison will advance the city's "Youth Services Initiative," a program designed to bolster youth programs in the city.
Troy also will use the grant to establish and expand community media centers for use by youth and families. These facilities will complement existing media centers within Troy's School and Virtual Learning and Training Center, where Connected Kids access will also be available. 3Com will provide wireless local area networks (LAN) to facilitate Connected Kids projects and in-service training for teachers and agency staff.
Through the ensemble of electronic resources the city and its partners are creating, Connected Kids will be able to help youth organizations market their youth programming directly to students and their families. With 3Com's support, Connected Kids will also allow Troy teachers and students to make the most of today's online resources as they move forward in the new century.
