Managing Change in the School Library
Paddling Through White Water
S everal years ago, I was talking with one of my colleagues about library automation. She related to me the reaction of a librarian in her district to new technology. "When the online catalog comes in the door, I'm going out." Knowing that the district was fully automated, I asked, "What did she do?" The reply: "She walked out." As Director of Library and Media Services for a fast-growing school district, I hav e seen the change new technologies have brought to school library media centers. The average years of experience of the 32 school library media specialists (SLMS) in my district is 17 years. An "average" SLMS spent the first decade of his or her career honing skills and becoming a master of this profession. Automated circulation brought a welcome respite to the clerical drudgery, while videotape brought a respite from the constant coddling of temperamental film projectors. The beginning of the second decade brought the promise of relegating Mr. Sears and Mr. Dewey to their rightful place (in the hands of real catalogers) and an end to the ever present hangnails, the malady of anyone who files hundreds of catalog cards. The end of the second decade threatens to whiz by in a dizzying blur of rapidly changing formats and altered methods of service delivery. How should we handle this dizzying change? I asked our district's librarians what they considered the greatest challenge technolo gy brings to school library service. The most consistent answer, by far, was time time to learn, time to teach others, and time to fulfill all of the other responsibilities traditionally associated with library service. The second most frequent response centered on the challenge of teaching students to be critical, responsible, ethical "consumers" of information.
