Engineer mentors who volunteer for the 2002 National Engineers Week Future City Competition TM will help introduce a new generation of young people to the essence of engineering. At the same time, however, they'll be sharing that message with a much larger audience, as schools, teachers, parents, businesses, and local and national media get involved with this increasingly popular educational effort. Engineering is sometimes called the stealth profession. For all the good that engineers do, most people rarely consider the critical role they play in society. That makes the Future City Competition, now in its tenth year, an ideal way to showcase the many facets of engineering, its challenges and rewards. And, not coincidentally, it allows engineers a chance to shine as individuals, too. The Future City Competition invites seventh- and eighth-grade students working in teams of three under the guidance of a teacher and engineer to design a city of tomorrow, first on computer and then in large, three-dimensional scale models. Beginning at the school level, and then in regional competitions across the United States, the student teams vie for a chance to win a free trip to Washington for the national finals. Using

UC Berkeley gets $2.8 million CDC grant, joins nationwide network of public health academic centers fighting bioterrorism 26 September 2002 By Sarah Yang, Media Relations Berkeley - A new $2.8 million federal grant will help University of California, Berkeley, researchers battle bioterrorism, infectious disease outbreaks and other emergent public health threats through a new Center for Infectious Disease Preparedness. The three-year grant, announced today (Thursday, Sept. 26), establishes UC Berkeley's School of Public Health as the site of one of four new academic centers for public health preparedness. The academic centers are funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in collaboration with the Association of Schools of Public Health. UC Berkeley and the other three new centers - at the University of Michigan, University of Oklahoma and University of South Carolina - will join 15 others funded last February as part of the $2.9 billion bioterrorism initiative launched by President George W. Bush earlier this year. "The weaknesses of the nation's public health infrastructure were made clear in last year's anthrax attacks," said Dr. Arthur Reingold, professor and head of epidemiology at UC Berkeley's School of Public Health and principal investigator of the grant. "We learned that we need to improve coordination and communication throughout the public health system, from the local to the national level. These centers for public health preparedness are a major step forward in reaching that goal."

In 1987 the School of Medicine established the Hippocrates Project, the forerunner of AES. From the beginning the mission of these units has been to fashion a multidisciplinary, faculty-student effort to identify, study, and invent the variety of ways by which computer and communication technologies can enhance the learning process. The ultimate goal of the project is the transformation of the institution into a Knowledge Syncytium - a learning and problem-solving environment that supports access to information unfettered by time and space, which promotes creation of knowledge, its instantaneous communication, and enhances both individual creativity and collaborative action. Why MCNY?
As of October 1, 2002, Audrey Cohen College is now Metropolitan College of New York. Why? Because along with your help, we decided that MCNY better represents the community of leaders who have helped to build this outstanding academic institution. Our mission and values haven't changed - just our name.
Frequently Asked Questions About Our New Name
Why did you change the College's name?
Metropolitan College of New York is our new name. It helps others understand who we are and what we are accomplishing. There was confusion among potential students, employers and others about what Audrey Cohen College was all about. Some thought we were a woman's college or a secretarial school. The new name, MCNY, also communicates our commitment to the city. We have expanded to the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island, so we are truly metropolitan.
Wasn't this kind of sudden?

Combing through reams of IRS documentation, Mark Nelson and undergrads Taylor Smith '03 and Diana Thomas '03 are finding solutions to why hugely expensive IT projects, such as those implemented by the IRS, fail up to 70 percent of the time. Material World

A five-year $3.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation to Rensselaer will establish a first-of-its-kind global laboratory that expects to do for materials science what the Human Genome Project did for biotechnology. The International Materials Institute for Materials Informatics and Combinatorial Materials Science will create radically new and multifunctional materials engineered from the atomic scale.
