    About NZ - Geography
    New Zealand Geography
New Zealand consists of two large islands, North Island and South Island, plus several smaller ones of which Stewart Island is the largest and often referred to as 'our third island'. North and South Islands are separated by the 32km / 20mile wide Cook Strait. To the north and east lies the Pacific Ocean and between ourselves and Australia lies the Tasman Sea.
The total land area is 270,535 sq Km / 104,453 sq miles, about the size of Italy, the United Kingdom or the US state of Colorado. North Island is volcanically active with a central plateau. South Island has the high snow covered mountain peaks and glaciers of the Southern Alps, a range running almost 500Km / 300miles along the Island. Our longest river is the Waikato on North Island (425 Km / 264 miles), the largest inland stretch of water is Lake Taupo also on North Island (607 sq Km / 235 sq miles) and the highest point is Mount Cook on South Island (3754 m / 12316 ft). Over 75% of New Zealand is above 200m.
Land use is broken down to approximately: forested 30% - meadows and pastures 50% - agricultural and under permanent cultivation 15% . Sheep and cattle graze on the rich farmland around Hamilton and New Plymouth in North Island and around Dunedin and Invercargill on South Island.

New Zealand is 1930km (1200 miles) southeast of Australia and consists of two major islands, the North Island (114,470 sq km/44,197 sq miles) and the South Island (150,660 sq km/58,170 sq miles), which are separated by Cook Strait. Stewart Island (1750 sq km/676 sq miles) is located immediately south of the South Island, and the Chatham Islands lie 800km (500 miles) to the east of Christchurch. To view a map of New Zealand The country's largest city, Auckland, is situated on the peninsula that forms the northern part of North Island. The southern part of North Island is characterised by fertile coastal plains rising up to volcanic peaks. Going from north to south temperatures decrease. Two-thirds of the country is mountainous, a region of swift-flowing rivers, deep alpine lakes and dense subtropical forest.

    GEOGRAPHY AND WEATHER
In the south-west Pacific Ocean, New Zealand is a large, long group of islands - two main land masses separated by Cook Strait, and many smaller islands, including inhabited isolated islands and groups 590-930 kilometres offshore. Its nearest large neighbour - Australia - is almost 2,000 km away. A massive mountain chain, the Southern Alps, runs almost the full length of the South Island. This is an area of outstanding scenic beauty, with the Marlborough Sounds in the north, and Fiordland with its remote, deeply cut inlets in the south. Although most of the land - more than three quarters - is 200 metres or more above sea level, there are extensive rolling downlands in South Canterbury and Hawke's Bay, and fertile plains in both main islands. The Weather New Zealand is in the southern temperate latitudes midway between the Equator and the South Pole. The climate is maritime, with nowhere inland reaching more than 100 km from the sea. Slow-to-change sea temperatures have a moderating effect on temperatures. The prevailing wind is westerly, with many parts of the country subject to extremes of wind and rain. This is because the rugged terrain disturbs and channels the wind. Wellington can be windy because it is on Cook Strait, a 20 km gap in an otherwise continuous chain of mountains. Many microclimates exist in particularly sheltered or exposed places. Seasons are opposite to the northern hemisphere, with January and February the warmest months and July the coldest. Temperature averages range from 7°C in July to 16°C in January - but summer temperatures reach the mid-20s in many places.

the geography ..... New Zealand has a wide variety of terrain within a relatively small area - mountains, lakes, rivers, fjords, gorges, glaciers and volcanoes. It has a long coastline with multifarious types of beach, a majority of which have golden sands. However, white-sanded, clear-watered beaches are predominant in the subtropical north (Bay of Islands). Black sanded beaches can also be found in both the North Island (Taranaki) and South Islands (West Coast).
In the South Island there are extremely rugged coastlines (Kaikoura) and special geographical features like the blow holes at Punakaike, also known as The Pancake Rocks due to their physiognomy. The Marlborough Sounds and Fiordland coasts have narrow beach lines and deep bays with fantastic fishing.
The major mountain regions are in the South Island (The Southern Alps). The highest mountain is Mount Cook (Aorangi) which is 3764m (12,349ft). The South Island lake districts have two unique glaciers that flow close to the sea, Fox, and Franz Josef Glaciers. In the North Island there are four major volcanoes. Ruapehu 2796m (9175ft), Ngaurahoe, 2290m (7515ft), and Tongariro 1968m (6517ft) are situated in close proximity to each other in the centre of the North Island while Mount Taranaki 2518m (8260ft) is situated further to the west.
There are eight major lakes in the South Island. The largest is Te Anau (344sq.kms, 133sq.miles), followed by Lake Wakatipu (Queenstown) and Lake Wanaka. New Zealand’s largest lake is Taupo in the North Island, which extends over 606sq.kms. (232sq.miles) and is the crater of a huge extinct volcano. The central North Island is a volcanic plateau with areas of significant thermal activity, hot springs, mud pools and geysers, particularly around Rotorua.

    New Zealand's Geography
New Zealand lies in the southern Pacific Ocean, 1600 kilometres east of Australia. It is made up of the North and South Islands and a number of smaller islands, with a total land area of 270 500 square kilometres. The main North and South Islands are separated by Cook Strait. No part of New Zealand is more than 128km from the sea. Mountain ranges and hill country dominate New Zealand's landscape - one of the most striking physical features is the Southern Alps. These, along with fiords, glaciers and lakes, and the coastal plains of Canterbury and Southland, add to the variety of the South Island scenery. In the North Island, the volcanic interior contains New Zealand's largest lake, Lake Taupo, and most of the country's active volcanoes - Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro - all usually quiet, altough Ruapehu has been active since September 1995. Hot springs, geysers and mudpools also form part of the volcanic system centered around Rotorua. The North Island of New Zealand is a remarkably diverse landscape. Each region has its own distinctive character - from the giant kauri forests of Northland, beautiful beaches of the Coromandel, steaming fumaroles and volcanoes of the Central North Island, and centres of Maori culture and tradition in Rotorua and the East Cape. With its mountains, glaciers, rivers, lakes, forests and fiords, the South Island of New Zealand is renowned for its magnificent scenery and the pristine condition of its wild landscapes.
