European exploration in the region would have to justify itself not only in terms of a route to Cathay, but also in terms of what of value might be found on the New World itself. Later Exploration John Cabot may have discovered an ocean route from Europe to North America, but the information he returned with did little to clarify the geography of eastern Canada. Whether this was the northeastern tip of Asia or one of the islands that geographers believed to lie out in the Ocean Sea nobody yet knew. Over the next quarter century, however, a succession of voyages undertaken by several Portuguese explorers as well as the discoveries of Giovanni Verrazano, sailing for the king of France, proved beyond doubt that something resembling a full continent lay astride the route to the east. Section of Gerolamo da Verrazzano's map of the world, 1529.
Dreams of Empire: Canada before 1700
(44 kb) Enthusiasts continued to believe that there might be a narrow channel through this landmass or at least a northern, navigable waterway around it. Further European exploration in the region, however, would henceforth have to justify itself not only in terms of a route to Cathay, but also in terms of what of value might be found in the New World itself.

The river shown to the left is Eclipse River, Labrador. The longest river is the Churchill in Labrador; with its tributaries it drains much of the Labrador Plateau. At Churchill Falls, the river drops some 75 m (some 245 ft); a large hydroelectric power project has appreciably diminished the flow over the falls. The major rivers draining the island are the Exploits, Gander, and Humber.

Geography
The province of Newfoundland is made up of the island of Newfoundland and Labrador to the north. Labrador lies on the most easterly part of the mainland of Canada and reaches far north to the Hudson Strait. The island of Newfoundland is situated at the mouth of the Gulf of the St.Lawrence River, in the path of major shipping lanes which pass to the north and the south. Newfoundland is roughly triangular in shape. Its 6,000 miles of coastline are deeply indented with sheltered coves and rugged capes. The surface of the island is wild and hilly, and the coast steep and rocky. Newfoundland lies close to the Grand Banks, once one of the richest fishing grounds in the world. Top of page
Early history
Norsemen knew of the island of Newfoundland from very early times, and told of Newfoundland in The Vinland Sagas. European fishermen, French, Spanish and Portuguese fished off the coast here as early as 1500. Through 17th and 18th centuries English and Irish fishermen and their families gradually settled in the Eastern part of the Island. Settlers from France and the Channel Islands occupied the south and west. From Newfoundland, fish was shipped to markets in the Mediterranean and Europe and south to the West Indies and South America. At the same time vessels crossing the Atlantic Ocean brought new settlers and trade to North America. By the 19th century there were hundreds of vessels passing through Newfoundland waters each year.

St. John's, the provincial capital, has a population of 177, 000 and is the oldest and most easterly city in North America. Newfoundland observes a distinct time zone, Newfoundland Standard Time (NST), which is a half-hour earlier than Atlantic Standard Time (AST).
