General information on Newsgroups This page contains general information on Usenet newsgroups. Introduction
Usenet news is one of the oldest and most widely used functions of the Internet. Usenet lets you exchange messages with other members of themed "newsgroups". Unlike e-mail, these messages can be accessed and read by anyone. There are tens of thousands of newsgroups for every possible topic and Usenet keeps growing. New groups – and new discussions – are constantly being created. Before using Usenet, please note and respect Demon Internet’s Usenet News Acceptable Use Policy . Violation of this policy will result in appropriate measures being taken by our Abuse department. Proper netiquette is expected when posting Usenet messages. Configuration
Newsreader software is required in order to download and read newsgroups. To configure the software for the first time, use the following settings: Server: news.demon.nl
Port: 119 (the standard news port)
If asked to enter a user name and password, these can be left blank.

Architecture and Design: General Information
  • Intro
    • "The software architecture of a program or computing system is the structure or structures of the system, which comprise software components, the externally visible properties of those components, and the relationships among them. By 'externally visible' properties, we are referring to those assumptions other components can make of a component, such as its provided services, performance characteristics, fault handling, shared resource usage, and so on. The intent of this definition is that a software architecture must abstract away some information from the system (otherwise there is no point looking at the architecture, we are simply viewing the entire system) and yet provide enough information to be a basis for analysis, decision making, and hence risk reduction." (Bass, Clements, and Kazman)

NAU Class Newsgroups: General Usenet Information
Usenet news is the world's largest BBS (Bulletin Board System) with thousands of "newsgroups." Each newsgroup may have hundreds of participants worldwide, all talking about a common interest (such as astronomy, computer languages, or woodworking). Ther e are a number of applications that allow you to read and post to Usenet News; if you are using a web browser, you can also search Usenet for messages regarding specific topics using the DejaNews service. Postings to newsgroups may travel around the world, so please take some care before making a statement in a newsgroup. It's generally considered a good idea to follow a discussion for a few days before adding your own commentary. Also, be forewarned th at the Internet can be a rough and tumble place; nearly everyone has had at least one bad experience with rude and unappreciative feedback. If you use a web browser to access NAU's news server usenet.nau.edu, you will notice that you are automatically subscribed to three newsgroups, one of which is news.announce.newusers

General E-Mail Resources
First of all, what are the differences between listservs, mailing lists, bulletin boards, and newsgroups?
  • Listservs used to be used generically to mean mailing lists. Now, since listserv is considered to be a specific type of software used to administer mailing lists, listserv is generally reserved to mean the software rather than the mailing lists. Mailing Lists are online lists to which recipients may voluntarily subscribe or unsubscribe in order to receive messages. The lists contain a series of messages from various subscribers discussing a series of "threads" or topics as defined by the subject headings of each message. Mailing lists may be "moderated" (ie an administrator filters the messages and chooses which ones are passed on to the general list) or "unmoderated" (ie all messages sent to the list are sent to all subscribers; no-one filters any messages out). Mailing lists are based upon "push" rather than "pull" technology. "Push" technology means that information is pushed toward the recipient of that information only when a user has actively subscribed to that list. Push technology means that the recipient only has to log on to that person's email account in order to access that information. The messages are sent automatically to that person's mailbox.

As you probably know, your internet service provider (ISP) is not allowing you to access Usenet in its entirety, causing you to miss out on much of what Usenet has to offer, including newsgroups containing mp3 music files, multimedia files, pictures / jpg files, and program (exe) files. We feel that it is your right to choose the content that you access online and therefore, we are committed to bringing you uncensored and unmonitored access to all areas of Usenet. And, of course, UsenetNewsServer.com believes in your right to privacy. We do not keep a log of the groups you read or download. The content that you post on any Usenet newsgroup is your business. So, if you want to read and download from Usenet in privacy and are tired of your ISP blocking access to certain newsgroups or censoring the postings that are on their servers, then you've come to the right place. (1) women-in-hockey mailing list
The women-in-hockey mailing list on the plaidworks.com server was created to allow people to discuss anything having to do with women playing ice, street, or roller hockey, or who are somehow involved in these sports. People interested in getting involved with these sports and/or playing are also welcome. This list is not limited to women only, but to anyone interested in women's hockey. This is a regular e-mailing list where anyone who is subscribed to this list will receive all e-mail messages sent by other people subscribed to the list. This mailing list is generally quite busy, especially during the hockey season, and is generally considered THE mailing list for women's hockey. I'd highly suggest subscribing. One question that you will be asked when you subscribe to the list, using the link above, is "Would you like to receive list mail batched in a daily digest?" I would suggest selecting "Yes." Let me explain what this means. If you select "No" you will receive each message in a separate e-mail message, but if you select "Yes" to sign up for the digest version you will receive one message each day that contains all messages sent that day. Since there may be 20 to 30 messages sent each day, I highly recommend the digest form of the mailing list, as it makes the amount of e-mail received from the list quite manageable.

    http://www.mvps.org/visio/
Visio is a drawing packaged based on the green plastic drawing templates of the past. Rather than require the user to have excellent drawing skills, the user selects predrawn shapes from a template and drags them to the drawing. This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to using Visio. The user is not limited to the templates provided by Visio. Items on a Visio drawing can be interrogated by a program. The Visio drawing can be used as a graphical front end to a database. Items on a Visio drawing can be manipulated by a program.
    History
Visio was first released by Shapeware in November, 1992. In early 1994, Shapeware, later renamed Visio, asked four CompuServe users, Steve Rindsberg, Dave Brodsky, Ward Yelverton and John Marshall to act as volunteers in the Visio section on CompuServe. The reason for choosing these four was their volume and nature of their responses. Dave joined Visio and is now an MS employee, Steve provides technical support as a MS Powerpoint MVP, John continues as a MS Visio MVP.

    What is Listserv?
Listserv, which stands for List Server, is a mail list program that runs on UNIX. It provides "mail-exploding" capabilities so that people with a common interest can communicate with each other by sending mail to a particular address (one address per Listserv list), which then redistributes the mail to each person "subscribed" to the list. Each person subscribed to a particular list gets a copy of each piece of mail in their mailbox.
