Focus on Africa
by Odd de Presno
Sample text from the Online World Monitor newsletter
ISSN: 0805-6315. December . (C) by Odd de Presno, Norway. Links are not maintained! Check the handbook for current links. Earlier this month, I visited Lagos, Nigeria. Getting in and out was a bad experience. The Murtala Muhammad Airport's customs people asked for bribes, and some in an aggressive way. The amount requested seemed to increase by the number of stars on the uniform. I paid some of them off to avoid more hassle.
Then they discovered my laptop computer! Five of them jumped on me. " You must pay US$200.00! You can reclaim the money when you leave. " A lie. We later discovered that they had given me a receipt for VAT on the amount. Worthless. . . . Beware!
I had checked up on the country before leaving, so I knew that there were problems ahead. Still, my negotiating position was weak.
Background information on all African countries is available in the CIA World Factbook. The Online World resources handbook explains where to find it, but you may find it easier to search the book using a Web browser.

Lagos Lagos metropolis and indeed, the Nigerian society is witnessing the last hours of the cinema-going tradition. In the late 1970s and through the 1980s, Danjuma International Cinema, Moricass Road, Agege was the toast of cinema lovers in Lagos. A brainchild of the late business mogul, Alhaji Danjuma Haruna, Danjuma International Cinema was the place to go for the best in American, Indian and Chinese films. Then, there was also Jebako Cinema, located on Capitol Road. It was established as an arm of the more popular Jebako Cinema in Idi-Oro, Mushin. Larco Super Cinema at Agbotikuyo and Pen Cinema later swelled up the number of cinema houses in Agege.

Collectively, culture is a way of life in a given society. Tourism is the vehicle through which this way of life is appreciated. In Nigeria, culture is manifested in art, dance, language, literature, folklore, mores, music, governance, and even the environment. According to archaeological finds, Nigeria’s artifacts depicting the early life of the people date back to 2000 years. The Nok Culture, the earliest of the finds depicted the early life of the people of the Nok region North of the Benue River. The characteristic features of the Nok culture, which flourished from 500, BC to AD 200 is the terracotta figurines associated with it and the extensive use of iron. The source of the knowledge of an iron technology has been attributed to the civilization of ‘Meroe’ in what is today the Republic of Sudan, as well as to Carthage in North Africa.

Casting is still made but there is nothing produced now to compare with the fabulous Ife and Benin Bronzes. These perfect example of portraiture and the "cire peerdue" method of casting, together with the equally perfect terracotta thought to be of the same period and possibly by the same craftsmen, have no equals anywhere.

Lagos has a very diverse and fast-growing population, resulting from heavy and ongoing migration to the city from all parts of Nigeria as well as neighboring countries. In 1992 Lagos had an estimated population of about 1,347,000. The population of its metropolitan area was about 10.9 million in 1996. The United Nations predicts that the city's metropolitan area, which had only about 290,000 inhabitants in 1950, will exceed 20 million by 2010, making Lagos one of the world's five largest cities. The Yoruba, an African people inhabiting southwest Nigeria, constitute the city's principal ethnic group. English is the most commonly used language, but Yoruba and other Nigerian languages are also spoken. Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001
