The Muslim World, demographically speaking, defines where majorities and significant minorities of indigenous populations are practitioners of the Muslim faith, that is, Islam. Though it is not necessary to maintain, Islamically speaking, geopolitical boundaries and state structures, per se, de facto national entities and political boundaries exist. Red alert in Nigeria
Neil Brodie
O n 12 May ICOM (International Council of Museums) released its Red List which catalogues African antiquities under imminent threat of looting or theft. The list was drawn up at the AFRICOM-sponsored Workshop on the Protection of the African Cultural Heritage held in Amsterdam in October 1997 and contains eight categories of material, three of which are exclusively Nigerian, and one partly so. That nearly 50 per cent of the Red List is comprised of Nigerian material is a timely reminder of the depredations which that country continues to suffer. In recent times, the illicit trade in antiquities first began to worry Nigerians during the 1970s and as a result in 1972 Nigeria ratified the UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property . In 1977 the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) was established to implement the National Commission for Museums and Monuments Decree no. 77 which, among other things, forbids any person unauthorized by the NCMM to buy or sell antiquities (jegede 1996, 128-31). During the 1980s, however, the looting continued and museums were increasingly targeted. In 1987 nine objects were stolen from the National Museum at Jos. Things deteriorated still further during the 1990s when it is estimated that 429 objects were stolen from 33 museums or institutions nationwide (Adeseri 1999b). The Red List reveals that between April 1993 and November 1994, for instance, 40 objects were stolen from the Ife museum while a few years later staff at the Owe Museum were viciously attacked and one was killed. 13 statues were removed from the National Museum of Esie in 1993 and a further 21 in 1995.

My love of African culture began when I went to Nigeria to teach in 1980. There I learned to speak the Hausa language, to eat African food and wear African clothes. During my five years of living in Nigeria, Africa got "into my blood." To continue my interest in African studies I went to the McGill University Faculty of Religious Studies, where I completed a Ph.D. in 1993, with dissertation on the topic African Theology and Social Change , under the supervision of Dr. Gregory Baum. Research trips to Kenya in 1992 and 1996 have also been very rewarding. My love for African culture continues. I hope you find my articles and links helpful. - Ian Ritchie, Ph.D. [Email me at: ian.ritchie@sympatico.ca

An African nation will host the 2010 World Cup. But though the prospect excites the fans in the countries competing to host the competition, they also know that money and infrastructure will probably count more than football culture and previous success on the field in putting forward the winning bid.
As Africa's most populous nation, it is understandable that Nigeria have been the major exporter of footballing talent from Africa to all corners of the globe. At last count, there were more than 250 Nigerian footballers playing professionally around the world, some of them superstars in the major leagues of Europe, others barely eking out a living.
Now Nigeria wants the world to come to it, specifically in 2010 when the World Cup finals are hosted in Africa for the first time.
As one of Africa's superpowers, Nigeria more than holds it own among the six candidates who are in the race, but they will soon find out that sheer size and international prestige counts for little when the decision is finally taken.
Egypt, Libya, Morocco, South Africa and Tunisia are the five other countries who have also announced their intention to bid, although the whole process is still in its early stages.

What do you think?

“People, please let's be realistic, there are only two nations who can organise this big event and these are Morocco and South Africa. So the question is which of these two will be able to convince Fifa. We know that South Africa has an advantage in terms of stadiums but Morocco in terms of security and a perfectly closenes to Europe. And honestly if I was Fifa, I would give Morocco the benefit of the doubt, because South Africa already staged the rugby and cricket world cup, which they deserved because these sports are very popular in this country......but Fifa should give Morocco, a fantastic African football nation, a chance to organise the soccer world cup. I'm convinced that Morocco can offer the world a fantastic world cup. Imagine world cup matches will be played in exotic venues like Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Agadir, etc. I can hardly wait....can you”
Eugene, France
“Morocco has the strongest claim. They have a good football heritage, like Nigeria, but they are also committing to a good infrastructure for the competitions like South Africa. All in all they have the best all round bid.”
Tony, England

She comes from a family of dedicated Pan-Africanists and courageous fighters for freedom and justice. Her father, M.K.O. Abiola, won the presidential election held in Nigeria in 1993, but served out his term in solitary confinement, incarcerated by the military. He died in prison on the eve of his release. Her mother, Kudirat, was a democracy leader who organized major strikes and marches, and fought assiduously against the military. In 1996, she was assassinated in the streets of Lagos. To continue the legacy left by her parents, Hafsat founded and directs an organization called the Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (

CULTURE AND TOURISM
Summary of Investment Opportunities in Nigeria Introduction Culture Because of the great diversity of people and culture, Nigeria has distinguished herself over the centuries in the field of arts. Nigerian versatility in art is so great that it is generally felt that all African nations should view Nigeria as the principal trustee of the most durable fruits of black artistic genius. It is not precisely known when the first works of Nigerian art reached the outside world, but in 1897, following a British punitive expedition to Benin, over 2,000 Benin bronzes and ivories were shipped to England and later dispersed all over Europe and America. Nigeria's cultural heritage is woven from threads of history and diversity, legend and conquest. Tourists visiting the country will gain insights to a glorious past as well as a promising future, set amid the natural beauty of this diverse country. From rain forests in the south, broad savanna woodlands in the center to a semi-desert region in the north, Nigeria offers a remarkable range of physical beauty in her land and hospitality of her people, ready to be enjoyed by the tourist fortunate enough to choose this land of ancient empires as their travel destination. Nigeria is a vast country with a population of about 120 people covering about 923,768 sq.km of landmass, located wholly within the tropics. The country aptly described as the 'Giant of Africa' is richly endowed with ecological and cultural resources, which are of universal recognition. The richness and diversity of the Nigeria culture is a manifestation of the socio-cultural differences of the over 250 ethnic groups that inhabit the land for ages.
