Richard M. Nixon Reconciliation was the first goal set by President Richard M. Nixon. The Nation was painfully divided, with turbulence in the cities and war overseas. During his Presidency, Nixon succeeded in ending American fighting in Viet Nam and improving relations with the U.S.S.R. and China. But the Watergate scandal brought fresh divisions to the country and ultimately led to his resignation. His election in 1968 had climaxed a career unusual on two counts: his early success and his comeback after being defeated for President in 1960 and for Governor of California in 1962. Born in California in 1913, Nixon had a brilliant record at Whittier College and Duke University Law School before beginning the practice of law. In 1940, he married Patricia Ryan; they had two daughters, Patricia (Tricia) and Julie. During World War II, Nixon served as a Navy lieutenant commander in the Pacific.

Of all the requests made each year to the National Archives for reproductions of photographs and documents, one item has been requested more than any other. That item, more requested than the Bill of Rights or even the Constitution of the United States, is the photograph of Elvis Presley and Richard M. Nixon shaking hands on the occasion of Presley's visit to the White House. The Meeting The Documents The Photos
The Meeting
On December 21, 1970, Elvis Presley paid a visit to President Richard M. Nixon at the White House in Washington, D.C. The meeting was initiated by Presley, who wrote Nixon a six-page letter requesting a visit with the President and suggesting that he be made a "Federal Agent-at-Large" in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. The events leading up to and after the meeting are detailed in the documentation and photographs included here, which include Presley's handwritten letter, memoranda from Nixon staff and aides, and the thank-you note from Nixon for the gifts (including a Colt 45 pistol and family photos) that Presley brought with him to the Oval Office. These materials chronicling the Presley-Nixon meeting were obtained from the Nixon Presidential Materials Project at the National Archives at College Park (College Park, Maryland).

RICHARD M. NIXON 37th U.S. President Richard Nixon was a lawyer and Republican politician who held the posts of U.S. congressman (1947-51), senator (1951-53), vice president (1953-61), and finally president of the United States (1969-74). As a fiercely anti-communist senator from California, Nixon was pegged to be Dwight Eisenhower 's running mate in 1952, despite Nixon's relative youth: he was 39 when nominated. Eisenhower beat the Democratic nominee Adlai Stevenson in both 1952 and 1956 and Nixon served both terms as vice president. In 1960 Nixon was the Republican candidate against John F. Kennedy in one of the closest elections in U.S. history. Defeated by Kennedy, he returned to California and ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1962. (After the loss he made his famous bitter farewell to the press, saying "You won't have Nixon to kick around anymore.") In a dramatic comeback, Nixon defeated Hubert H. Humphrey in the election of 1968, then easily won re-election in 1972. Although he had an aggressive foreign policy that included successes with China, the Soviet Union and the Middle East, a weak economy and domestic dissent over the Vietnam war plagued his administration. His personal style remains a point of public contention: Nixon was either a hard-driving genius or a dirty sneak, depending on your point of view. After his 1972 re-election Nixon's administration was consumed by the developing Watergate scandal. In 1974 Nixon resigned in shame, his involvement in the Watergate cover-up having been proven by recordings he himself had made. He was replaced by

    Second Term: The Watergate Affair
Soon after his reelection Nixon's popularity plummeted as the growing revelations of the Watergate affair indicated pervasive corruption in his administration, and there was widespread criticism of the amount of government money spent on his private residences. Further problems ensued when the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) found that Nixon's donation of papers to the federal government, which had been taken as a deduction on his federal income tax returns, had been made after a law went into effect disallowing such deductions. The IRS assessed (1974) Nixon for the back taxes plus interest. Sections in this article: First Term Nixon, Richard Milhous

    Biography

Richard Milhous Nixon was the 37th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES (1969-74). During his administration the United States withdrew its military forces from Vietnam and informally recognized the government of the People's Republic of China. The WATERGATE scandal that occurred at the beginning of his second term brought Nixon to the verge of IMPEACHMENT by the HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES and led to his resignation, the first ever by a U.S. president. Early Career Born in Yorba Linda, Calif., on Jan. 9, 1913, Nixon was the second of Hannah and Francis Nixon's five children, all of whom were boys. Despite the economic difficulties and emotional tensions of the Nixon household, young Richard excelled in school, graduating second in his class from Whittier College (1934) and third in his class from Duke University law school (1937). From 1937 to 1942 he practiced law in Whittier, Calif. When the United States entered World War II, he worked briefly for the tire-rationing section of the Office of Price Administration in Washington, D.C., and then served in the navy as a supply officer in the South Pacific. Upon his return to Whittier after the war he entered politics, becoming the

    Biography

Richard M. Nixon's political career was marked by extraordinary contradictions. Many people believed that his career had come to an end in 1960, after he narrowly lost the presidential ELECTION to John F. KENNEDY . Two years later, in 1962, he again suffered defeat, this time in the race for governor of California, and Nixon himself announced that his days in politics were over. However, a combination of events pushed him to the political forefront once more, and his election as PRESIDENT in 1968 was one of the most remarkable political comebacks of modern times. Nixon brought with him to the presidency a lifetime of political experience, sometimes controversial, as a congressman, senator, and VICE PRESIDENT . His achievements as president, particularly in foreign affairs, were significant, and they won him election to a second term in 1972. But his accomplishments were overshadowed by his role in the Watergate scandal, which forced him to resign from office in 1974, the only U.S. president to do so. Early Life Richard Milhous Nixon was born on January 9, 1913, in Yorba Linda, California. He was the second of five sons of Francis and Hannah Milhous Nixon. His parents were serious, hardworking Quakers, who ran a small lemon farm. When Richard was 9, the farm failed and the family moved to Whittier, California, where his father operated a combination general store and gas station. The Nixons had little money, and the boys helped out by pumping gas, working in the store, and doing various odd jobs.

His accomplisments included one of the most dramatic events of his first term in 1969, when American astronauts made the first moon landing; his quest for world stability which included visits in 1972 to Beijing and Moscow, reducing tensions with China and the former USSR (Russia) and he announced an accord with North Viet Nam to end American involvement in Indochina. In 1974, his Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, negotiated disengagement agreements between Israel and its opponents, Egypt and Syria. In his last years, Nixon gained praise as an elder statesman. By the time of his death on April 22, 1994, he had written numerous books on his experiences in public life and on foreign policy and was honored on an American postage stamp.
