Urban Nexus
An e-bulletin of the Family Network of CPRN
Welcome to Urban Nexus – a new initiative of the Family Network of the Canadian Policy Research Networks.
Urban Nexus builds on the Family Network’s successful Social Cohesion Nexus , an electronic information service to the policy community for the last two years that ended in September 2002.
Urban Nexus is a monthly e-bulletin of policy research, news and events on cities and communities that starts from the premise that “place matters.” Urban Nexus is for policy makers, researchers and interested members of the public seeking up-to-date information, from Canadian and non-Canadian sources, about new research on cities. It covers a range of policy perspectives, and literature in French as well as English.
Urban Nexus uses an urban lens to present traditional policy fields in a new light, and to highlight emerging issues relating to cities and communities. In each issue you can expect to find:
  • reviews and summaries of recent studies and reports on a specific theme; news about upcoming events and research; and

    NORTH CAROLINA, one of the South Atlantic states of the U.S., bordered on the N by Virginia , on the E by the Atlantic Ocean, on the S by South Carolina and Georgia , and on the W by Tennessee North Carolina entered the Union on Nov. 21, 1789, as the 12th of the 13 original states. It was principally a farming state until the 1920s, when such manufactures as textiles, furniture, and tobacco products began to dominate the economy. Manufacturing and services (including tourism) remained pivotal to the economy in the early 1990s, and agriculture and forestry were also important. Two U.S. presidents, James K. Polk and Andrew Johnson , were born here, and another, Andrew Jackson , was born in the border area between North and South Carolina . North Carolina, named for Charles I and Charles II of England, is known as the Tar Heel State and the Old North State.

Chapter Two: Geography
Historically, Trinity Court and Pritchard Park are located near the former Negro settlements that existed in Chapel Hill during the 1930s. Potter's Field, Windy Hill, Tin Top Alley, and Southwest lane were four major Negro settlements found in the general vicinity of Trinity Court and Pritchard Park, mentioned in a study by Dorothy Jones on Negro settlements (Allen et al., 1993). However, the Jones' study does not provide direct evidence that there are exact geographical overlaps with present housing sites. Located near Airport Road, Franklin Street, and Umstead Road, the two housing developments are physically separated by North Pritchard Avenue and a steep hill. The division between Trinity Court and Pritchard Park are discussed in detail in Chapter Eight: Sense of Community and Reputation (Map 2). One of the units in Building C of Trinity Court houses the Trinity Court and Pritchard Park Family Resource Center (FRC). The Chapel Hill Police sub-station was also located in the

INTRODUCTION
Since early history, people have used maps to capture and display information about their world. And from the time that President Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to survey the Louisiana Purchase, federal agencies have played an important role in surveying, mapping and displaying information about the United States - - its land, waters, roads, weather and its people. Today, because of information technology, for the first time it is possible to integrate large amounts of information from many sources and make it available over the web. Vice President Gore described the potential: The National Partnership for Reinventing Government has pursued this vision in three primary ways:
  • Calling for a cooperative public/private effort to create a National Spatial Data Infrastructure to integrate geographic information about the country;

Johnson is William Rand Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Management and Sociology, Johnson-Webb is a doctoral candidate in geography, and Farrell is a professor of social work and public health. All are at UNC-CH. Historically, whites, blacks, and Native Americans have constituted a numerical majority of the population of North Carolina and the South generally. In recent years, however, population growth driven by immigration has dramatically transformed the racial and ethnic composition of the state and the region. Over the past two decades, newcomers to the state and the region have included substantial numbers of people who either were born in, or are offspring or descendants of people who were born in, Mexico, another Latin American country, or Southeast Asia. Between the two demographic groups represented by the newcomers, Hispanics constitute the larger and therefore the more visible one. In this article we provide a general overview of the size and the composition of North Carolina’s Hispanic newcomers, describe their settlement patterns, and assess the response of other North Carolinians to the influx. We conclude by discussing several issues that must be addressed if the state is to avoid some of the tensions and the conflicts that have accompanied the settlement of Hispanics in communities like Los Angeles that have traditionally been gateways for immigrants.

    Kansas City, Mo. Hyatt Regency Crown Center, June 7, 1997 The National Civic League named the ten 1997 All-America City Award winners here tonight at an awards ceremony. They are Fremont , California; Hillside Neighborhood (Colorado Springs), Colorado; Aberdeen , Maryland; St. Joseph , Missouri; Bronx County , New York; Asheville , North Carolina; Statesville , North Carolina; Bismarck , North Dakota; Aiken , South Carolina; and Texas City , Texas. Sponsored by The Allstate Foundation, the All-America City Award annually recognizes ten communities for civic achievement and grassroots community problem solving. Ranging in population from 4,518 (the Hillside Neighborhood, Colorado Springs) to 1.2 million (Bronx County, New York), the 1997 All-America Cities tackled such issues as homelessness, crime, education, poverty and racial intolerance. This week's grueling awards competition in Kansas City drew more than 1,400 delegates from 30 finalist communities hoping to win the prestigious All-America City designation. "These ten All-America City Award winners show what citizens can do when they work together in a spirit of hope and realism to attack the tough circumstances facing their communities," said Senator Bill Bradley, Chairman of the National Civic League. "This is a results-oriented program that provides opportunities for community learning by transferring knowledge and success from people to people, neighborhood to neighborhood and community to community."
