Daughtridge Farm, Edgecombe County THE STATEWIDE ARCHITECTURAL SURVEY For three decades the State Historic Preservation Office in the Office of Archives and History has conducted North Carolina's statewide architectural survey program. The Preservation Office sponsors and co-sponsors, assists and guides dozens of local and regional architectural surveys throughout the stateall part of the statewide program whose mission is to identify, record, and encourage the preservation of North Carolina's rich and varied historic and architectural heritage. Status of Architectural Survey in North Carolina See the County Summaries for brief descriptions of survey activities in each county. For each community and county, as for the state and nation as a whole, creating a photographic and written record of historic places is the first, crucial step in recognizing, valuing, and preserving the heritage of the past for the benefit of the present and the future. Each survey project provides a local base of information about community history and architecture. Ideally the surveyor and the survey serve as a prismgathering information from many different residents and many different places, then reflecting that knowledge back to the community in a way that offers residents and others new understanding of the whole and its parts. Benefits of Architectural Surveys : The bedrock of preservation planning and actions, a thorough local survey forms the basis for many preservation decisions. Survey reports, files, and maps are maintained as a permanent record with many longterm benefits: they permit evaluation of properties for nomination to the

State and Local Other levels of government have also joined the task of promoting the growth of telecommunications services. The following is an excerpt from the California League of Cities policy statement: Rarely a day goes by that one does not hear some reference to the so called "information superhighway". The rapid development of advanced telecommunications resources, such as fiber optic networks that will carry voice, video and data signals, carries the promise of new economic prosperity and new tools for streamlining the delivery of both public and private services. While California cities can look forward to enjoying these benefits in the near future, we must also be mindful of the impact of the emergence of this spawning industry both on cities, and on the citizens they serve. To this end, the League of California Cities has developed a comprehensive telecommunications policy that will help cities define their roles as user, provider, regulator, and consumer advocate on the information superhighway...... The policies outlined in this report are a product of the knowledge, experience and values of several dozen city officials who make up the League's Telecommunications Task Force. A primary objective of the Telecommunications Task Force has been to increase city officials' awareness of the relevance of telecommunications policy in the business of local government. The Task Force has spent the past five years addressing telecommunications issues as they relate to cities. Over the years, their work has included educational forums, pilot projects for telecommuting and facilities sharing, and a comprehensive report entitled A Telecommunications Framework for Cities which was developed by the Institute for Local Self Government and adopted by resolution at the League Annual Conference in 1991."

    Overview

Established in 1891, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) is one of the three original institutions of The University of North Carolina System. It is a public, coeducational, doctoral granting institution composed of approximately 12,500 students, 2,700 of whom are graduate students. While the majority of students are from North Carolina, students also come from forty different states and forty-three foreign countries; minority enrollment is approximately 17 percent. The UNCG faculty is composed of more than 700 members dedicated to excellence in teaching and research; ninety-three percent hold doctoral degrees. The School of Education at UNCG was recently ranked among the top 50 schools of education in the nation by US News and World Report and is one of just two Carnegie-designated, doctoral granting institutions to achieve this ranking. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is an Equal Opportunity educator and employer. The Community
The University is located in a region of north central North Carolina known as the Triad. The region's three principal cities are Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point, and together with the surrounding counties, the three cities comprise a metropolitan statistical area of almost 1.2 million people. The area is one of mild climate, natural beauty, and diverse industry. Greensboro is North Carolina's third largest city, with a population of approximately 200,000. The city offers a variety of cultural activities including museums, opera, ballet, the symphony, and the University's own Weatherspoon Gallery which boasts an impressive collection of modern art. The Blue Ridge mountains to the west and Atlantic beaches to the east are within a few hours drive. The campus itself is composed of 170 acres and nearly eighty buildings with brick walkways and flowering trees spread throughout.

    http://www.electricities.com/Deregulation.htm
WHAT IS DEREGULATION AND WHY IS IT SO COMPLICATED? North Carolina is working to determine whether to move forward with deregulating their electric industry. The Study Commission on the Future of Electric Service in North Carolina has been studying electric service choice since 1997. They are being slow and deliberate to be sure deregulation benefits everyone in North Carolina. ElectriCities supports further study of deregulation to avoid the problems other states have faced. Much like you have a choice of long distance phone service, the same will hold true for your electricity provider. The goal is for deregulation to stimulate growth and help lower electric rates while giving customers new services and benefits. It sounds easy enough, but there is a problem. Menu: Related Links: If North Carolina is to bring lower rates to its customers, state legislators must deal with the issue of stranded costs. Basically, stranded costs are the amount a utility provider, or in our case, a town or city, has invested in a power plant compared to what they are actually worth. In a deregulated industry it is unlikely we could recover our investment because the rates would be lowered and not sufficient enough to pay for the earlier investments.

The John and June Allcott Gallery and the Undergraduate gallery provide many exhibition opportunities for students and classes. In addition to our excellent faculty and facilities the department encourages its students to take full advantage of our existence in a superior research institution. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offers programs that enhance our majors and graduate students, such as the Program in Cultural Studies, African-American Studies, Program in Asian Studies, Center for the Study of the American South, Southern Oral History Program, Institute of Latin American Studies, Women's Studies Program, Departments of Anthropology, Communication Studies, Folklore, Philosophy, and Religion, and the School of Journalism. The Department of Art welcomes students to its programs regardless of race, sex, or creed and will make particular efforts to assist disabled students who may elect to major in either Studio Art or Art History.
