We help find natural resources needed to build tomorrow, and supply scientific understanding needed to help minimize or mitigate the effects of natural hazards and environmental damage caused by human activities. The results of our efforts touch the daily lives of almost every American.

On September 17, 1895, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) hydrographer Cyrus Babb, with assistance from North Carolina State Geologist Joseph Holmes, established a streamflow-measurement gage on the French Broad River at Asheville (fig. 1). This streamflow gage, which was the first in the South and only the third east of the Mississippi River, has been in continuous operation since that time. Likewise, the USGS has worked cooperatively for 100 years in North Carolina with State, local, and other Federal agencies to provide credible data and unbiased scientific information. The wide range in physiographic and geologic conditions across North Carolina (fig. 2) is reflected in the diversity of earth science issues in the State. Figure 1. Streamflow-gaging station in continuous operation since 1895 on the French Broad River at Asheville. In 1994, the USGS operated about 400 streamflow-, ground-water-, and water-quality-measurement stations in North Carolina. Most stations are jointly funded by the USGS and State, local, and Federal agencies.

More than 27,000 students from 50 states and 99 different countries join to form one of the nation’s outstanding universities. NC State’s beautiful campus hosts a great diversity of people, programs and excitement. Student-athletes select NC State for many reasons: strong academics, outstanding athletic opportunity, excellent reputation, career advantages, the prospering Raleigh/Triangle location and many social opportunities. NC State’s main campus, comprised of 623 acres, is located one mile west of downtown Raleigh, the state’s capital and one of the finest cities in the nation. In fact, Money magazine recently selected Raleigh as “The Best Place To Live In America.” The state’s first veterinary school is located nearby on a 182-acre campus. In addition, the future of NC State is taking place on Centennial Campus. A unique venture between government, private corporations and NC State, centennial campus represents a model of education in the new millennium. More than 1,000 acres have been dedicated to the new campus, with plans underway for a four-star hotel, conference and convention area and golf course. The continuing development of Centennial Campus will more than double the size of NC State.

Multiculturalism and Race Relations at the End of the Century " The time has long passed when people liked to regard the United States as some kind of melting pot, taking men and women from every part of the world and converting them into standardized, homogenized Americans. We are, I think, much more mature and wise today. Just as we welcome a world of diversity, so we glory in an America of diversity-an America all the richer for the many different and distinctive strands of which it is woven. "

    Introduction to UNC
    Campus and Student Profile
To be a successful teacher, you need to know something about the institution in which you teach and about the undergraduates who take your classes. This knowledge is particularly important if you come from out of state or another country. Every university has a unique history and special culture that can influence classroom teaching in subtle ways. Your students' academic and cultural backgrounds also directly affect aspects of instruction, so the more you know about them, the more effective you can be as a teacher. The following profile is based on data from the 1990-1991 school year and is intended to provide a broad context for understanding UNC and its students. Your task as a teacher is to find out more specific information about the institution and your department and about the background, skills, interests, and needs of the students in your classes.
    The University
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the flagship of the 16-campus university system. UNC was chartered in 1789 and opened its doors in 1795, making it the first state university to admit students. From one building, 41 students, and two professors, the University has grown to 162 major buildings, 23,852 students, and 1,900 full-time faculty teaching in more than 100 fields.
