GET RAIL INDUSTRIAL ACCESS GRANTS
State funds have recently boosted construction of railroad sidings serving expansions of three companies.
At MOUNT HOLLY (Gaston County), a Rail Industrial Access grant of $124,000 helped pay for a siding at Buckeye Technologies. Buckeye is a leading manufacturer of specialty cellulose and absorbents used in products such as diapers, wipes and napkins. Buckeye will employ 220 and invest $75 million in its new facility at Mount Holly. The company will receive 800 carloads of pulp per year.
At LIBERTY (Randolph County), a grant of $94,500 helped construct a siding for Times Fiber Communications (TFC), a manufacturer of cable products for video, telephone and other high-speed data-transmission devices. TFC will employ 120 and invest $15 million in its new facility. The company will receive 87 carloads of raw material (plastic) per year. TFC, the first occupant in Liberty Industrial Park, will occupy a building constructed as a public-private venture between the Randolph County Economic Development Commission and the Compass Group, an investment firm.

Over a number of decades, Virginia legislators, bound to their hometown bankers by social and political relationships, never took seriously the changing trends in finance until it was too late. They failed to understand that Virginia is not an island. Believing that the old banking ways were good for Virginia and themselves, legislators tried to preserve them.
