Twelve passenger trains serve 16 North Carolina cities daily along six routes. The Carolinian operates between Charlotte, Washington and New York City; the Silver Star operates between New York and Miami with stops in Raleigh and Southern Pines; the Silver Meteor and Silver Palm operate between New York and Miami with stops in Rocky Mount and Fayetteville; the Crescent runs between New York and New Orleans with stops in Greensboro and Charlotte and the Piedmont runs instate between Raleigh and Charlotte. The Piedmont and Carolinian are supported by the State of North Carolina. All the trains are operated by Amtrak. Commuter Rail Study Corridors (dotted red lines)
As urban populations continue to grow, the need increases for commuter rail in major metropolitan areas. Several regions - the Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill (or Triangle) area, the Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem, Burlington (or Triad) area and the greater Charlotte/Mecklenburg (or Metrolina) County area - are now considering commuter rail service.
The Triad Transportation Authority, formed in 1998, has begun studying transportation options to enhance mobility in the Piedmont Triad area. The City of Charlotte has studied transit options for the area's commuter population and in November 1998 voters approved a 1/2 cent sales tax to support transit.

Executive Summary BBI International very much enjoyed the opportunity to organize and conduct the 2001 EWS. As in 2000 and 1999, it was strikingly clear how each state has its own niche opportunities, needs and aspirations. It was a dynamic process in which we had the opportunity to take part. Six new workshops were held in the 2001 Series and support was given to the 2000 (and even the 1999) Series states to encourage continued activities. The location and dates of the 2001 EWS workshops were: January 11, 2001 – Boise, Idaho May 10, 2001 – Salt Lake City, Utah June 4, 2001 – Raleigh, North Carolina August 24, 2001 – San Juan, Puerto Rico August 29, 2001 – Des Moines, Iowa October 11, 2001 – Baltimore, Maryland In 2000, the workshops were held in Portland, Oregon, Columbus, Ohio, Golden, Colorado, Indianapolis, Indiana, Albany, New York, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Columbia, South Carolina and Austin, Texas. In 1999, the workshops were held in Fairbanks, Alaska, Raymond, Mississippi, Madison, Wisconsin, Rapid City, South Dakota, Birmingham, Alabama, Lansing, Michigan, and Waterville, Maine. A second workshop was held this year by three of the 2000 states: May 8, 2001 – Portland, Oregon

    Local Climate Changes
Over the last century, the average temperature in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, has increased 1.2°F, and precipitation has increased by up to 5% in many parts of the state. These past trends may or may not continue into the future.
Over the next century, climate in North Carolina may change even more. For example, based on projections made by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and results from the United Kingdom Hadley Centre, (with a range of 1-5°F) in all seasons (slightly less in winter and summer, slightly more in spring and fall). Precipitation is estimated to increase by 15% (with a range of 5-30%) in winter and spring, slightly more in summer and fall. Other climate models may show different results, especially regarding estimated changes in precipitation. The impacts described in the sections that follow take into account estimates from different models. The frequency of extreme hot days in summer would increase because of the general warming trend. It is not clear how the severity of storms such as hurricanes might be affected, although an increase in the frequency and intensity of summer thunderstorms is possible.
