U sing T he O utdoors to T each E xperiential S cience Using The Outdoors to Teach Experiential Science is an exciting elementary teacher education project that transforms school grounds into educational resources for hands-on learning. Since 1991, more than 3,400 educators at 152 selected sites across North Carolina have taken part in the UTOTES experience. UTOTES Goals: to promote positive attitudes of teachers and students toward living things to increase the use of the environment in teaching all subjects to develop site-based science leadership to enhance the value of school grounds as a learning resource through native plantings and the creation of wildlife habitats. How Does UTOTES Work? Eight workshops led by a Museum naturalist are held at the school site during the school year. Teachers learn how to make better use of their current school environment and to assess the potential for improving the grounds as a place for wildlife and learning. Each workshop shares content information and has participants engage in practical, hands-on teaching strategies that use common plants and animals as a focus for multidisciplinary learning. A Project Team representing school faculty and administrators, parents, and other community resources is created to provide guidance and long-term support for developing, maintaining, and expanding the project. UTOTES resource materials help participants develop wildlife habitat projects and learning activities on their school grounds.
