Erskine Bowles is the second-born son of former state politician Hargrove "Skipper" Bowles. Majoring in business, Bowles went to college at the University of North Carolina and graduated in 1967. Bowles then joined the Coast Guard reserves and enrolled at Columbia Business School in New York. He graduated with his MBA in 1969. Upon graduation, Bowles began working at Morgan Stanley & Co. In 1973, Bowles moved back to North Carolina. He was named Vice-President of corporate finance at Interstate Securities. In 1975, he founded the firm that would become Bowles Hollowell Conner, a leading investment banking firm. Under the Clinton Administration, Bowles became the head of the Small Business Administration. While in the Administration, Bowles increased the number of loans to businesses given to minorities and women. He also made applying for the loan easier, condensing the paperwork down to a single page. In 1994, he was asked to serve as Deputy Chief of Staff by Bill Clinton. At this time, the government was faced with the responsibility to respond to the Oklahoma City bombing and it was his job to coordinate this response. In 1996, Bowles returned to North Carolina where he helped found Carousel Capital, a merchant bank. Bowles then accepted an invitation from the Clinton Administration to join them as Chief of Staff, staying on until 1998. He helped Clinton hire 100,000 new teachers and provide children's health insurance.

Long Gray Lines The Southern Military School Tradition, 1839-1915 by Rod Andrew Jr. Challenging assumptions about a distinctive "southern military tradition," Rod Andrew demonstrates that southern military schools were less concerned with preparing young men for actual combat than with instilling in their students broader values of honor, patriotism, civic duty, and virtue. Southerners had a remarkable tendency to reconcile militarism with republicanism, Andrew says, and following the Civil War, the Lost Cause legend further strengthened the link in southerners' minds between military and civic virtue. Though traditionally black colleges faced struggles that white schools did not, notes Andrew, they were motivated by the same conviction that powered white military schoolsthe belief that a good soldier was by definition a good citizen. About the author Rod Andrew Jr. formerly taught history at The Citadel and is now assistant professor of history at Clemson University. He has served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps and is currently a major in the Marine Corps Reserve.

About NCPR Advisory Board Contact Us Homepage What does it mean to be a North Carolina Democrat? By Tate Helms
President, Young Democrats of North Carolina November, 2002 What does it mean to be a North Carolina Democrat?
North Carolina Democrats care about other people and are willing to put their money where their mouths are. They recognize that democracies are not markets, and that unabashed self-interest cannot be the guiding light of a responsible and responsive government. In keeping with these viewpoints, North Carolina Democrats tend to have some pretty strong opinions on a whole range of different topics. Here's a sample of what North Carolina Democrats think about some of today's most pressing issues:
The Economy. North Carolina Democrats believe that effective management of the economy requires something other than lowering taxes in response to every stock market gyration or dip in GDP. Rather, they believe that North Carolina should build upon its greatest assets - the knowledge and creativity of her people - and invest heavily in upgrading the skills of the workforce to match the demands of the new economy. North Carolina Democrats think that businesses should settle and grow in this state not because our people will work cheaper than anyone else, anywhere else in the world - they won't - but because they can do and think things no one else can. North Carolina Democrats believe that speeding our state's transition to a new economy will require careful, objective analysis and the resources to make focused investments, not just slashing taxes and hoping everything works itself out in the wash.
