    MODERN KOREA: SOUTH AND NORTH
    Fall 2002 Instructor: Edward Reed
    Office: 327 Ingraham Hall
    e-mail: ereed@facstaff.wisc.edu
; tel. 265-6568 or 262-3643 From foreign domination, poverty and civil war in the first half of the 20th century, two states have emerged and persisted on the Korean peninsula: the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea). What are the historical and cultural roots common to these two states? How did such starkly different societies emerge from the same historical legacy? What paths have they followed to national development and how do they differ? What are the prospects for reduced tensions, cooperation and ultimately unification on the peninsula? To address these and other critical questions, this course will examine political, economic and cultural development on the Korean peninsula from the early 20th century to the present, with particular focus on the two-state period that has prevailed since the end of World War II. We will briefly consider the legacy of the Choson Dynasty (1392-1910) and its failure to maintain Korean independence. We will then look at the impact and legacy of the period of Japanese rule (1910-1945) and the emergence of two Korean states after liberation from Japan. The causes and traumatic impact of the Korean War (1950-53) will be briefly examined.

    Current Research Projects
Hyangjin Lee's research interests lie in the cinema and culture in North and South Korea, the unification of Korea, and the cross-cultural analysis of East Asian cinema. Her research projects focus on the interplay between cultural dynamics and the socio-structural changes in contemporary Korea. She has written about the politics of gender, national identity and class structure in contemporary Korean culture and cinema. She is currently engaged in three research projects: the cinematic interpretation of cultural tradition and transitional identities in contemporary Japan and Korea; cultural integration and diversification towards an era of unification in Korea; and the social reality and 'realistic' traditions in North and South Korean cinema.

    Research Supervision
Hyangjin Lee welcomes applications to undertake theses on a broad range of topics dealing with the contemporary Korean society and culture, and with the cinemas of East Asia.

North Korea Exploration of the World's Most Mysterious Land Sections: Not a country like you and I know it. Welcome to my home page. During the first three days in October 1997 I had the chance to be in North Korea as a tourist. Natural curiosity took me there. I have traveled extensively and enjoy getting to the bottom of things. Having lived in Japan for over four years I found little to no news forthcoming from this land shrouded in mystery. The first opportunity I got I took and saw the land. As a matter of fact, I had found that Asia had a lot to offer but in the West Oriental culture could not be found and thus offered me few insights into its diverse cultures. Asia is very mysterious, which is a reason I came to live here in the first place. First, Orientals think differently from Westerners. We start our story with a bow What some of these pictures and story show are some views from this land of Koryo, among the first ever made public not officially sanctioned by the North Korean government. External North Korea The story starts with the first ride taken from the airport to the capital, Pyongyang. Poverty permeated the air. Unlike any world capital stifling with advertising of all sorts from the moment you look out the airport windows, Pyongyang's airport is very small with parking space reminiscent of an medium-sized mall, surrounded by trees. Half a dozen cars plus some buses were parked outside.

    North Korea's Power Play
North Korea has been a hot news topic throughout October 2002, and the last week of the month was no exception. Basically, the country recently admitted to developing uranium-enrichment facilities as part of their secret program to build nuclear weapons. Such efforts violate a 1994 agreement - the so-called "Agreed Framework" - that disallows such activities. In their defense, North Korean officials have said that the United States violated the agreement first: the American government has failed to move toward normal ties with the Asian nation, and there have been long delays in the completion of two civilian nuclear power plants that were promised under the pact. Relations between the U.S. and North Korea have been tense at least since the Korean War, shortly after Korea was first split into two parts - North and South - at the end of World War II. Through the years, North Korea has been extremely secretive regarding its military operations and political agendas, and it has also kept itself relatively isolated culturally and socially from the rest of the world.
