Northwest Territories
Geography

If the Yukon is the far north at its most accessible, the Northwest Territories is the region at its most uncompromising. Just three roads nibble at the edges of this almost unimaginably vast area, which, together with Nunavut, occupies a third of Canada's landmass. The Northwest Territories is about the size of India but contains only 60,000 people, almost half of whom live in or around Yellowknife. Unless you're taking the adventurous and rewarding Dempster Highway from Dawson City across the tundra to Inuvik, Yellowknife will probably feature on any trip to this territory, as it's the hub of the flight network servicing the area's widely dispersed communities. Climate
The region experiences a diverse climate. The north has Arctic and sub-Arctic winters whereas the south is more temperate with mild summers and cold winters. Regardless of the season, brings lots of warm clothes with you when travelling to the Northwest Territories. Culture
The present population of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut is approximately 60,000. Dene, Inuvialuit and Métis make up 48%, non-Aboriginals about 52%. Most live in small communities; Yellowknife, the capital, has a population of more than 15,000.

It is composed of ten provinces and three territories. It is bounded on the western edge by the Pacific Ocean, on the northern edge by the Arctic Ocean, on the eastern edge by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the southern edge by the United States of America (USA) . The edge running between countries is called a "border". In Canada, the country of the United States of America (U.S.A.) is either called "the States" (as in "We're going to the States for the weekend") or "the U.S." (as in "There's no public health care in the U.S."). If you want to enrage a Canadian then go ahead and refer to the States as "America". After all, Canada is in North America and so is Mexico A popular symbol of Canada is the mountie. A mountie is a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (R.C.M.P.). Their fancy dress uniform is brilliant red as illustrated in the photo taken on Parliament Hill, Ottawa on Canada Day. Canada Day is July 1st and is Canada's birthday. It used to be called Dominion Day.

    Exploration
The exploration of the Far North centred largely on the search for the Northwest Passage, a water route over North America that could potentially be used as a trade route to the eastern hemisphere. European exploration of the Arctic began in the mid 1500s and continued until the early 20th century. It would lead to a greater understanding of the geography of Canada's North and of the value of the natural resources found there. In 1897, Wilfrid Laurier's government was the first to take concrete action to assert Canada's sovereignty in the Arctic Archipelago. Prime Minister Laurier sent William Wakeham there to establish Canadian jurisdiction. From 1903 to 1911, the expeditions of A. P. Low and J.-E. Bernier maintained a Canadian presence in these isolated territories.

The result of the poor labour situation this past year has had major impact on education throughout Alberta. The early months of 2002 witnessed the majority of Alberta public and separate school teachers on strike and although short-lived, the labour situation remained strained through to the end of the last school year. Provincially arbitrated settlements were awarded over the summer resulting in the largest class sizes ever in the province’s history and the entire province in the throws of a task force on public education to help capture the priorities for education in the years to come. One particular aspect of this labour strife has been felt by Alberta Learning’s curriculum development branch. The K-12 review of the Social Studies Program of Studies has, as a mandate, validation by stakeholder advisory committee. This committee is comprised of various stakeholder groups from all geographic regions of the province and has, at its core, practising classroom educators. The Alberta Teachers’ Association, in reaction to the controversial legislation passed this past spring to suspend the rights of teachers from job action and association, requested solidarity amongst its members to boycott all voluntary services with Alberta Learning. As a result, curriculum change went ahead without the consultation of classroom teachers. Social studies teachers of K-9 found on their desks upon return to the classrooms this fall, draft curriculum without the teacher validation process necessary for the full and co-operative implementation such change requires.

For the purposes of this project, we considered all land and waters included within the territorial boundary within Canada as part of the Northwest Territories (NWT). NWT land and waters include the ocean waters or sea floors that are part of the Beaufort Sea- Arctic Ocean complex, as limited in the south by the mainland of the Northwest Territories and the off-shore limit of the Yukon Territory, in the west by the International Boundary with the United States, in the east by the boundary with the Territory of Nunavut and in the North by the 90 th Parallel. The Northwest Territories are strikingly rich in ecological transitions and contrasts. From south to north, the boreal forest leads us to the taiga with its patches of permafrost, and then to the tundra, where permafrost is continuous From east to west, the massive archean rocks of the Canadian Shield give way to horizontal sedimentary rocks under the northern extension of the great interior plains of North American, and then to northern mountains of sedimentary, igneous and glacial origin

Dateline: 10/10/00 The Canadian Shield is an igneous and metamorphic rock complex surrounding Hudson Bay in Canada like a giant horseshoe. It is the foundation of the North American continent. It lies under our part of eastern Illinois too, but here, it is buried below some 15,000 feet of sedimentary rock. Only a few wells in Illinois have ever encountered it. We see examples of the shield in the glacial erratic boulders scattered across the Wisconsinan Age drift surface in the northeastern quarter of the state. Many are beautiful examples of granites and gneisses and also intermediate and basic igneous rocks. One of the more interesting examples is called the Gowganda Tillite,
