Culture
Arabic is the official language of Oman, though English is widely spoken in business circles. In the northern coastal areas you can find traders and sailors and a large number of expatriates from the Indian subcontinent who also speak Farsi and Urdu. Most Omanis are Ibadi Muslims, belonging to one of Islam's earliest fundamentalist movements. The Ibadi are distinguished by their conservative doctrine and their system of hereditary rule. Despite the modern appearance of much of Oman, the country remains intensely traditional. In the countryside hamlets and coastal villages, day-to-day life has changed little in centuries. Men can frequently be seen sporting bright blue, loose-fitting, floor-length shirt-dresses called dishdashas , often with a curved khanjar knife dangling from the waist. Women's dress is far more colourful than the simple black cloaks common in much of the rest of the Gulf region. Bright printed dresses are wrapped with even more colourful shawls and veils. Oman has devoted a great deal of effort to preserving its traditional arts, dance and music, though you're more likely to see traditional dancing staged in a museum than spontaneously breaking out in a village street. Oman is particularly known for its curved, silver-sheathed khanjar knives and silver jewellery.

Oman's Culture O man is a great country to visit. Rich contrasts in environments can be witnessed, between Mountain, Desert, Wadi, pristine Beaches and the rich green of Salalah that is soaked during its annual encounter with the monsoon. The Sultanate's development since the ascension of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said has been astounding, and these days the welcome from the people throughout the country is rarely short of a hearty. The earliest known settlements are from the 3rd Millennium BC but it was much later that Oman dominated as a seafaring nation , with Frankinsence (grown in Dhofar in the south) the most important trading commodity. The Omani nation had few rivals in at sea. However the arrival of the Portuguese in 1507 changed the balance of power and they dominated the region for a century, bringing Muscat to regional power and erecting impressive forts and towers in the vicinity. The reemergence of Omani power paved the way for their dominance of the area once again, trading and ruling across East Africa , Oman controlling both Zanzibar and Mombassa Subsequent divisions between the coast and the interior, and the military actions which eventually led to stability, were tied closely to

Country Info Oman Introduction Oman General Data Oman Maps Oman Culture ... Oman Time and Date Oman Culture Back to Top Oman is a tribal society, although tribal influence is gradually declining. Women have enjoyed relatively more freedom in Oman than elsewhere in the Arab world. Attempts have been made to preserve much of the traditional society in the midst of development. Traditional elements of architecture have been incorporated in new buildings, and Oman passed a law (1986; since revised) forbidding Omani nationals to marry foreigners. The Ministry of National Heritage and Culture is charged with preserving historic buildings, excavating archaeological sites, and supporting such traditional crafts as weaving and silver and gold jewelry making. The Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra was formed in the late 1980s and has performed with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. Oman is noted for traditional craftsmanship in such areas as shipbuilding and metalworking. Omani craftspeople produce fine silver jewelry as well as handsome ornamental daggers called khanjars, which are part of the well-dressed Omani male’s wardrobe. Traditional architecture reflects Persian and Indian influences. While there is a strong tradition of popular literature and dance, the conservative Ibadi interpretation of Islam has limited musical expression. As in other Muslim countries, the two most important festivals, called Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, mark the end of Ramadan. there is government censorship of the press and state-run newspapers, several independently run Arabic-language newspapers are published on a daily and weekly basis, as are two English-language dailies. The television station is state-run, and radio stations broadcast in both Arabic and English.
