Ontario Government Launches Distance Education Network
Judy Roberts
Northeast Regional Co-ordinating Centre On October 20th, 1986, the Ontario (Canada) Government announced that it would provide up to $5 million a year over the next four years to establish a new Northern Ontario distance education access network. The project was announced jointly by the Colleges and Universities Minister Gregory Sorbara and Education Minister Sean Conway in a combined video and audio press conference that linked Toronto, Sudbury, and Thunder Bay. Community access points throughout Northern Ontario have been established since that announcement with the objective of increasing the availability of secondary and post-secondary education in both French and English for northern Ontario residents. Each access point is equipped with "conventional" distance education technologies such as audio and video tape playback machines, audio conferencing units, and IBM and ICON computers. As well, each site has a facsimile machine. While the bulk of the money being provided by the Government will fund the capital and operating costs of the network, the project will also make funding available to colleges and universities for the acquisition and/or development of distance education programs. On March 3rd, 1987, the Ontario Government announced an initial series of grants to 24 post- secondary distance education projects worth a total of $1,241,205. Most of these projects involve collaboration among institutions. The largest provides funding of up to $705,000 over the next four years that will allow registered nurses in northern communities to earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing via distance education. The program is to be developed by Laurentian University in Sudbury and Lakehead University in Thunder Bay.

Information on the impact of Ontario Government Bill 160
Click here to return to homepage Information on the impact of Ontario Government Bill 160 on School Teachers, Students, Teachers Unions and the General Public - November 1997 I wish to bring to your attention the events that are taking place in the Province of Ontario Canada, where the current government in power is attempting to pass the ill-named Education Quality Improvement Act (Bill 160). Due to the extremely draconian and anti-democratic nature of the legislation, 126,000 teachers from all grades in the primary, mid, and secondary schools in Ontario, in the Public, French and Catholic systems, left their classes for a two week political protest (only 1% of the teachers refused to participate) during which time they were not paid, nor did they receive any strike pay. While the Ontario government and the right wing press that supported them said that it was an illegal strike, this was not the case at all. This was due to the fact that in order for this to occur, an official complaint had to be laid against the teachers union by a school board to the Ontario labour board. Not one single school board in on laid such a complaint. In addition, and despite the fact that over 2,000,000 students were affected, the majority of parents in the Province have supported the teachers. At this time the parents have begun the Green Ribbon Campaign of public support for the protection of the school system from government attacks., and have festooned a large number of schools with these ribbons. The Ontario government has used threats and intimidation to have these removed, and have attempted to ban teachers from wearing these ribbons in the schools. (The government has even attempted to start a Blue ribbon counter campaign to support bill 160, but this has failed miserably).

The Fight Against the Tories Continues - Help Sustain the Fight Police Defend the Tories with Brutal Force Ontario Common Front activists took over a building in protest of the government's role in homelessness, with the demand that affordable housing be built now! But the police moved in quickly and brutally, making over 50 arrests. The next day, more arrests were made at a demonstration outside the Tory Leadership Convention. The Ontario Common Front will continue to confront the Tories and their policies. No matter what, the fight will continue! But in order to build as strong a fight back as possible, we need people to come to the defence of those arrested, committing to fundraising for their legal defence. We must kick fundraising into high gear immediately to help provide lawyers, and transportation money for those from out of town so that no one falls through the cracks. As the excitement of the action fades from our minds, we mustn't forget those still stuck in the court system. While those arrested are still fresh on your mind, please make as large a donation as you can to the Common Front Legal Committee. Please go to your friends and canvas for donations, or organize a fundraising event. Any donation you can make will be gratefully accepted, whether it is $2 or $2000. Come to the defence those who have taken a stand for a better world. Help sustain this struggle.

So, you intend to try a visit to one of the Government run casinos in Ontario, Canada

Hopefully the following information will give you some insight into your chances of winning anything at the slots. For example did you know that the "Percentage Payback" on slot machines (that is the percentage of the amount gambled by players that the Casinos claim to pay back to players) in Ontario Casinos is SECRE T
Unbelievable but true. Slot players in Ontario Casinos are not allowed to even know what the odds are when playing slot machines. To read the full APPEAL ORDER PO-1745 on the subject click HERE - the red highlights are mine and my remarks are in blue - it is an eye opener!
Because of this Government monopoly this policy also applies to race-track casinos as well where competition is non-existant. The Government takes 75% of the gross revenues from these racetrack operations. You will never see slots in Ontario advertised at 90% or more "Payback" (or any "Payback" for that matter) because it is a Government monoply and they just do not need to compete. It should be noted here that of the three casinos ( Rama, Windsor and Niagara Falls) only the revenue from Windsor and Niagara Falls goes to the Ontario Government. The net profit from the Rama is shared among Ontario's 134 First Nations Indians.
