    History of Pakistan
    BACKGROUND TO PARTITION
The concept of a separate Muslim "nation" or "people," qaum, is inherent in Islam, but this concept bears no resemblance to a territorial entity. The proposal for a Muslim state in India was first enunciated in 1930 by the poet-philosopher Muhammad Iqbal, who suggested that the four northwestern provinces (Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, and the North-West Frontier Province) should be joined in such a state. In a 1933 pamphlet Choudhary Rahmat Ali, a Cambridge student, coined the name Pakstan (later Pakistan), on behalf of those Muslims living in Punjab, Afghan (North-West Frontier Province), Kashmir, Sind, and Balochistan. Alternatively the name was said to mean "Land of the Pure." (H.R.T.)

    Early History
The northwest of the Indian subcontinent, which now constitutes Pakistan, lies athwart the historic invasion routes through the Khyber, Gumal, and Bolan passes from central Asia to the heartland of India, and for thousands of years invaders and adventurers swept down upon the settlements there. The Indus valley civilization , which flourished until c.1500 B.C. , was one of the region's earliest civilizations. The Aryans, who surpassed the Indus, were followed by the Persians of the Achaemenid empire, who by c.500 B.C. reached the Indus River. Alexander the Great, conqueror of the Persian empire, invaded the Punjab in 326 B.C.

BACKGROUND TO PARTITION The Muslim League and Mohammed Ali Jinnah. so that the twin pillars of power represented the two main regional power bases in West pakistan and East pakistan.
    http://www.pakistaninformation.com/historyhtml.html
PAKISTAN HISTORY BACKGROUND TO PARTITION The gradual clarification of the British intention to grant self-government to India along the lines of British parliamentary democracy aroused Muslim apprehensions regarding ultimate political subjection to the Hindu majority of the population. Mohammed Ali Jinnah, as eager as any Hindu nationalist to bring British rule to an end, was at length driven to the conclusion, which the renowned poet-philosopher Muhammad Iqbal had already expressed, that the only way to preserve Indian Muslims from complete political, economic, and cultural subordination to the Hindus was to establish a separate Muslim state. By 1940, the demand for Pakistan had been formally endorsed by the Muslim League under his leadership. British policy, supported by the whole weight of the Hindu nationalist movement, labored hard to avoid disrupting the economic and political unity built up during the period of British rule. None of the many suggested alternatives to separation of Pakistan commended them-selves to Jinnah, whose leadership of the bulk of the community was unchallenged, and without his cooperation- of which the price was Pakistan-Indian independence was impracticable. His courage and implacable determination triumphed in the end. ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF PAKI5TAN Political decline.

    History
The first inhabitants of Pakistan were Stone Age peoples in the Potwar Plateau (northwest Punjab). They were followed by the sophisticated Indus Valley (or Harappan) civilisation which flourished between the 23rd to 18th centuries BC. Semi-nomadic peoples then arrived, and by the 9th century BC they had spread across northern Pakistan-India. Their Vedic religion was the precursor of Hinduism, and their rigid division of labour an early caste system. In 327 BC Alexander the Great came over the Hindu Kush to finish off the remnants of the defeated Persian empire. Although his visit was short, some tribes tell picturesque legends in which they claim to be descended from Alexander and his troops. Later came the heyday of the Silk Route, a period of lucrative trade between China, India and the Roman empire. The Kushans were at the centre of the silk trade and established the capital of their Gandhara kingdom at Peshawar. By the 2nd century AD they had reached the height of their power, with an empire that stretched from eastern Iran to the Chinese frontier and south to the Ganges River. The Kushans were Buddhist and under King Kanishka built thousands of monasteries and stupas. Soon Gandhara became both a place of trade and of religious study and pilgrimage - the Buddhist 'holy' land. The Kushan empire had unravelled by the 4th century and was subsequently absorbed by the Persian Sassanians, the Gupta dynasty, Hephthalites from Central Asia, and Turkic and Hindu Shahi dynasties. The next strong central power was the Moghuls who reigned during the 16th and 17th centuries. A succession of rulers introduced sweeping reforms, ending Islam's supremacy as a state religion, encourging the arts, building fanciful houses and, in a complete volte-face, returning the state to Islam once again.

    Wednesday, 11 July, 2001, 17:03 GMT 18:03 UK A history of India-Pakistan summits
    Vajpayee visited Lahore in 1999
By BBC South Asia analyst Alastair Lawson The summit on Sunday between Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee is the latest in a series of high profile meetings between leaders of the two nations over the last 50 years. Tension between India and Pakistan has meant that meetings between leaders of the two countries on their home territory have been few and far between.
While the cold war has ended and many countries of the world have embraced the concept of globalisation, frosty relations between India and Pakistan have remained unchanged for the last 50 years
The last was held in 1999 in Lahore, Pakistan, when Mr Vajpayee travelled on the inaugural bus service between Delhi and Lahore to meet his Pakistani counterpart at the time, Nawaz Sharif. The summit took place the year after India and Pakistan had carried out a series of nuclear tests and shortly before Mr Sharif was deposed by General Pervez Musharraf in a military coup.

    http://www28.brinkster.com/pakistan4ever/wordpakistan.html
How did the word "Pakistan" come into existence? Ch.Rehmat Ali was the first person who used the word "Pakistan". He said : " For, although I actually named it such much earlier, it was not until 28th January, 1933, that, in my first Declaration - Now or Never - calling for its separation from "India" I formally used the name, which by the dispensation of Allah and the blessing of His Rasool (Prophet), was ordained to ensure the elementary right of its people to a national solidarity under a national appellation. In his book "Pakistan- the Fatherland of the Pak Nation" he said : " It was in the (Now or Never) that I first used for our Indian homelands the name Pakistan, which I had invented for our combined Indian and Asian homelands, and about which the following brief explanation may be given here
In my early youth, three fundamental truths became clear to me about the future of our people and our lands.

    19. Pakistan & South Asian Association For Regional Cooperation
of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, pakistan and Sri and mineral assets, its history and civilization Intraregional exchanges in the SAARC framework
    http://www.pakboi.gov.pk/html/pakistan___south_asian_associa.html
PAKISTAN ::. PAKISTAN AND THE SAARC The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) was established when its Charter was formally adopted on December 8, 1985 by the Heads of State of Government of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
South Asia, home to nearly a fifth of humanity, is endowed with vast natural and human resources. It has the potential of becoming a vibrant region in the world, given its enormous resources in manpower, technology, agricultural and mineral assets, its history and civilization, arts and culture. Intra-regional exchanges in the SAARC framework and trade among its Member States can realise much of this potential.
The idea of regional cooperation in South Asia was first mooted in November, 1980. It was the shared desire of the peoples of South Asia to overcome common problems through mutual cooperation. The primary objective of the Association was, therefore, in the words of its Charter, "to promote the welfare of the peoples of South Asia and to improve their quality of life". Towards this end, the Charter called for efforts "to accelerate economic growth, social programmes and cultural development in the region"; to promote and strengthen collective self-reliance"; " to contribute to mutual trust, understanding and appreciation of one anothers' problems" and to "promote active collaboration and mutual assistance in the economic, social, cultural, technical and scientific fields".
Over a period of nearly a decade and half that SAARC has been in place it carries the image of high profile and low performance. A major explanation in this regard lies in the fact that relationship among the member states have often been marked by mistrust, misunderstanding and even hostility. The most common criticism about SAARC relates to its 'futility' in the presence of serious contentious issues between the members of the Association. The modest SAARC programmes and its limited coverage, exclusion of bilateral and contentious issues from its purview and subjecting decision-making process on unanimity are result of this reality.
