Culture
The people of Belau, as the islanders call their homeland, may appear to be among the most Westernized of all Micronesians in their casual American togs and baseball caps. However, they still frown upon skimpy beach attire away from the water, and most homes and many public buildings require that you leave your shoes near the door. Furthermore, many traditional rites have been retained over the years, such as those for a first-born child, and village chiefs still command an important role in the social hierarchy. Most Palauans are Christian, with the Catholic and Protestant churches well established and Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh-Day Adventists and Bahais gaining in membership. Modekngei is a revived form of the indigenous religion, which also shows up in traditions such as leaving a light on to ward off spooks. Staples of the traditional Palauan diet include coconut milk and meat (copra), cassava (tapioca), sweet potatoes and all sorts of fish and seafood. Japanese and American mealtime influences are common. Although not as prevalent as it is on Yap, many Palauans chew betel nut, which when mixed with lime powder produces copious amounts of bright red spit. Old-time chewers are noted by their red teeth, newcomers by the stains on their chins and shirts. Palauan is spoken at home and in casual situations, while English is more common in business and government. Schools teach both languages, so most Palauans are bilingual from an early age. The South-West Islanders speak some Sonsorolese and Tobian languages. Islanders have borrowed the Hawaiian term

Palau Yap Expedition
Supporters of Seacology are invited to join Executive Director Duane Silverstein on a fascinating trip to the Micronesian Islands of Palau and Yap from February 11 - 21, 2000. This is the first in a series of annual excursions for friends of Seacology to some of the world's most interesting islands. We will spend six nights on Palau and three nights on Yap visiting the underwater and land-based sites that make these islands unique throughout the world.
Palau's marine biodiversity is among the greatest on Earth. It has been selected as one of the seven underwater wonders of the world and is perennially chosen by divers as the world's number one dive destination. In Palau we will be doing four days of two-tank diving with Sam's Dive Tours, a recipient of Rodale's Scuba Diving magazine's Readers Choice Award. Seacology Advisory Board member Noah Idechong and the Palau Conservation Society will be our guides for interesting land and kayak-based tours of some of the most spectacular facets of Palau's culture and environment.
Yap is one of the most traditional and culturally unchanged islands in the Pacific. Grass skirts are worn. Huge wheels of stone money are still highly valued. Underwater, Yap is famous for its giant manta rays. In Yap we will be doing two days of two-tank diving. Renowned environmentalist Marjorie Falanruw, director of the Yap Institute and a Seacology grant recipient, will show us some of Yap's unique natural and cultural wonders.

The Road to Ruin: US, Japanese Developers Zero In on Palau by Scott Radway US, Japanese developers zero in on Palau Uro Ikesakes started fishing in Airai Bay when he was a teen-ager, swimming side by side with his family and friends, spearing fish after fish from a bustling coral reef. Fishing in the bay was a way of life in the village. Things are different now, more than 50 years later, but not because he is any less of a fisherman. His aqua-blue bay, once home to a healthy coral reef, is now mud-red and home to almost nothing but algae. After a full day of fishing today, his cooler is maybe half full. "We don't fish there anymore," said the 68-year-old subsistence fisherman, his crow's-feet framing his wistful stare. His is an unusual story for Palau, a small Pacific island nation with a population of under 20,000, known the world over for its awing natural beauty and its abundance of fish. But his is a story some officials fear could become all too common if leaders don't plan well for the future. The cause of their alarm is a multimillion-dollar U.S. road project on the pristine island of Babeldaob that they say has brought Palau to a monumental environmental and cultural crossroad.

Yapese Culture
Yap is located in the Western Carolines, about Midway between Guam and Palau. Yap is one volcanic complex made up of four islands plus eleven inhabited outer islands and atolls. The total land area of Yap State is 46 sq. miles. The first round of negotiations between Congress of Micronesia and the U.S. were held in 1969 to discuss the future political status of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which later became the Federated States of Micronesia. The Compact of Free Association between the U.S. and the Federated States of Micronesia was signed in 1986. This contract outlined the security and economic agreements. In 1991, Micronesia was admitted as a member of the United Nations General Assembly. There are four traditional, distinct languages in Yap: Yapese, Ulitian, Woleaian, and Satawalese. Yapese is the language spoken on Yap proper. The other languages are spoken in the outer islands. Words in Japanese, Spanish, German, and English are also woven into the language. Generally, Yapese youths speak English as their second language. Most elders speak Japanese as their second language. English is the official language of the Federated States of Micronesia. Many Yapese still wear traditional attire of loincloths or "thus" for the men and "grass skirts" or lava lavas for the women. "Thus" are generally made of red, white, or blue cloth. The grass skirts worn by Yapese women are not made of grass but of shredded leaves of ti, banana, betelnut, fragrant ginger, fern, and other leaves. Today, the western culture has influenced the Yap dress code and many Yapese are seen wearing shorts and t-shirts with name brand logos such as Nike. The more traditional ways of dressing are reserved for dance.

Palau is surrounded by the pristine waters of the Western Pacific. A visit combines the spirit and culture of the islands with tranquil ambience and beauty; a choice destination for scuba divers and snorkelers. Palau consists of approximately 340 islands, most of them tiny, about 500 mi/800 km east of the Philippines. Fewer than a dozen of the islands are inhabited. English is spoken widely, and the U.S. dollar is the official currency. The adaptable islanders have absorbed Japanese and American ways, while maintaining a distinctive culture of their own.
Palau has such a tremendous variety of sealife that its waters have been called God’s Aquarium. Palau (pronounced beh-LAU) is one of the world’s finset diving destinations. There are also gorgeous mountains, caves, waterfalls, rocky coastlines, inviting beaches and lush, tropical rain forests. There are few sights as curious as the Rock Islands—verdant green, mushroom-shaped islands that appear to float above the turquoise lagoon. The beautiful pictures of Palau were provided by Palau Pacific Resort.
After World War II, Palau became part of the U.S.-administered Trust Territory of the United Nations. The island finally gained its independence in 1994, when voters approved a Compact for Free Association with the U.S. Voters had previously rejected the compact seven times because of two controversial clauses: one gave the U.S. military
