The Fossil Record of Life

Note: Authorities differ as to precise time boundaries between geologic periods. Eon Era Period Epoch While this page is about paleontology and fossils, it is also inseparably connected to geology and plate tectonics. It is impossible to understand the stratigraphic and geographic distribution of ancient life on this planet without having at least a basic knowledge of these subjects. In addition, an understanding of radiometric dating is also beneficial, although you will not have to learn much about chemistry and physics to achieve that understanding.
This page is divided into two rather long sections. The first section lists all the geologic periods from most recent to most ancient. Wherever possible a series of maps is presented showing the size and position of land areas during each period. Also a small list of links is given for a description of the period and for museum and fossil exhibits related to it. The second section of this page contains a dozen or more broad topics within paleontology with a variety of links to help you explore each subject area. Those links will in turn offer you additional sources of data. A great deal about the fossil record of life is available online to help you learn. But I urge you to read a couple of books and a journal or two and, if possible, to take an introductory course in paleontology. Most colleges and universities offer them, and you can find online course material on this page. This is an exciting time in paleontology. New fossils are being reported almost daily and old, troublesome gaps in the fossil record are rapidly being filled. If you are really interested in being up-to-date subscribe to a paleontological news service.

This book was my textbook for Vertebrate Paleontology and Evolution at the University of Rochester back in 1992. The book is very daunting to look at if you just flip through it. However, it does a nice job of introducing concepts and terms to the reader. Its organization is straightforward, starting with the simplest vertebrates and eventually finishing with mammals. Most groups are covered well, considering that the author's cover every group of vertebrates known. The biggest problem I had with the book was the section on dinosaurs, the biggest reason why I took the class. The information on them was limited to a few pages and much of the information was out-dated even in 1992. However, if you are looking for a good book on vertebrates, this is a must have. Just realize that some of the information may not reflect our current understanding since the book is over 10 years old and many new finds have come to light, new ideas have been introduced, and old ideas reexamined.

http://people.hofstra.edu/faculty/J_B_Bennington/137notes/evolution.html
Paleontology Fossil Record of Evolution Evolution The word "evolution" is used by paleontologists and biologists to describe three related but distinct ideas: 1. The observation that life has a history. In other words, the deduction made from our studies of the fossil record that the world has been populated by a vast sequence of organisms that are no longer living. Most of the evidence in support of this observation comes from the fossil record. 2. The inference that the vast sequence of extinct fossils and living organisms is interrelated, i.e. that there is a connectedness to the living world such that all organisms are united by common descent. Evidence in support of this inference comes from comparisons of both living and fossil organisms and from the temporal sequence of species found in the fossil record. 3. The theory that purports to explain how new species are produced from previously existing species ( speciation ). Currently, the most widely accepted "theory of evolution" is a hybrid of modern genetics combined with Charles Darwin’s original "theory of descent with modification through the agency of natural selection" called the modern synthesis The details of how evolution works to produce new species is still being actively researched and debated, both by biologists and paleontologists. Because of the nature of the fossil record - in particular its relative lack of resolution at short time scales (ecological time) - most attempts to study generation by generation changes in species are carried out by biologists. Paleontology Resource DINOSAURS Welcome to the Paleontology Resource! This sight is dedicated to the wonderful scientific field of paleontology and all its aspects. There is information on evolution, creation, theistic evolution, dinosaurs, invertebrate paleontology, and much more. If you think that there should be something on my sight that you don't see, please feel free to e-mail me at Silvara34@aol.com or Hysphilodon@yahoo.com. Thanks for visiting, and enjoy! Please bear with me though, this sight is under major construction! What is Paleontology? Paleontology is the study of ancient life. This life can include dinosaurs, birds, icthyosaurs, alligators, even humans. Paleontology is closely tied in with geology, the study of the earth. If we do not study these two sciences hand-in-hand, we would be lacking from both sides. For example, a paleontologist, let's say Robert Bakker, finds a fossil. If he does not know his geology, he will have a hard time at first glance determining just how old that fossil might be. But, Robert Bakker is a very intelligent paleontologist, and he know that the strata of the rock can tell the story of the earth. He reads the structure and notices that the particular fossil he has found is in a layer of rock that is associated with the Triassic period. He can then estimate how old that fossil is. Hey, by the way, tell someone that this sight is here!
