Mar. 06,2001 The Signing Ceremony of Museum Sister Relationship Agreement between the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology and the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum
On March 6 of 2001, the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum (FPDM) entered into a museum sister relationship with the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IVPP), which is one of the largest paleontological institutes in Asia. IVPP has a long history of paleontological studies, and enormous materials on paleontology. There are about 150 institute staff, including about 60 researchers. Dr. Dong Ziming, who stands foremost among the dinosaurologists of the day, belongs to IVPP. IVPP and Fukui Government have established an intimate relationship through the Dinosaur Excavation Project. And this signing ceremony of museum sister relationship is a result of further development of the partnership with IVPP. From now on, we expect to establish a closer relationship by exchanging people and specimens.

This site is intended as a springboard to Internet resources on fossils, dinosaurs, paleontology, natural history, and related topics. I hope it proves useful to students, teachers, fossil collectors, paleontologists, and anyone else with rocks in their heads. I myself am a long-time fossil enthusiast with a special interest in dinosaur tracks (I have a web site devoted to my work on Texas tracks and the related Paluxy "man track" controversy ). Paleontology in Museums and Institutes in the 21st Century Douglas H. Erwin and Willi Ziegler
Origin and Historic Development In the 18th and early 19th century the public perception of earth history and biology was based on the typological-registration inventory of natural history objects then currently in vogue. These objects became known and were collected during the geographical exploration of the world during the times of Columbus, Vasco da Gama, James Cook, and others. In medieval times, natural objects were already being kept in galleries or collections that did not distinguish between natural objects and artifacts. During Renaissance time, these accumulated objects were kept in the so-called "art and wonder cabinets" and they served the continuing acquisition of knowledge in regard to the micro- and macro cosmos. Some objects from these collections were compared with their likes in a kind of playful association, and thus knowledge was gained about those deviating from the normal. It follows that each museum and each collection developed its own organization and depending on its individual history and on the time and circumstances of its founding (Ziegler, 1995, p.50). Thus, museums and collections are conditioned in their aims, their appearance; their sense of priority, their respective histories and by the local factors of the country in which they were established (Hudson, 1987, p. 83). These facts have to be taken into account in judging the future work of natural history museums, and it is hoped that they will resist any attempts at concentration, fusion or leveling.

Research in the Palaeontology Department is focused on these sites with a view to reconstruct the evolutionary history of our own and other animal species. Past climatic and environmental changes led to the evolution of the many different plant and animal species in East Africa today. Numerous important fossil specimens collected over the years comprise an impressive national collection. The department is responsible for the documentation of these fossils, the majority of which range in age between twenty and one million years. Scientists from all over the world come to study them and learn about the evolutionary history of our own species, Homo sapiens , and the prevailing climates and resultant ecology that provided habitats for plants and animals that lived in this region in the past.

Welcome to the Oceans of Kansas Paleontology web page. My name is Mike Everhart and I am your host on a virtual journey more than 85 million years "back in time" to observe some of the many strange and wonderful creatures that lived in the oceans of the Earth during the final stages of the Age of Dinosaurs. ( More info here ) I have collected fossils from the Smoky Hill Chalk of western Kansas for the last thirty years. I am now an Adjunct Curator of Paleontology at the new Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays, Kansas (for more information about the Sternberg Museum, see the note below). My handy paleo-reference page My interests are primarily in marine reptiles and especially mosasaurs and plesiosaurs . Oceans of Kansas Paleontology is an educational site that provides extensive information about the animals that lived in and over the ancient ocean that once covered Kansas and much of the Midwest United States (and Canada). This web site has very little information about dinosaurs, but we do recommend some excellent dinosaur sites on the Oceans of Kansas Links page. For more information about the origin of mosasaur and plesiosaur names, go to Ben Creisler's

Paleontology in Museums and Institutes in the 21st Century Douglas H. Erwin (Smithsonian Institution, Department of Paleobiology, MRC 121, Washington DC 20560-0001, USA). INTRODUCTION
Our discussions began with the recognition that the fundamental basis of all paleontological research is specimens and collections. These specimens may exist in the field, but much of our knowledge of them is with reference to material held in museum collections. Since the collections of individual researchers are ephemeral, museums and research institutions serve as the ultimate repositories for our documentation of the history of life, in addition to their role documenting past discoveries and as reference for future studies.
The second key theme is that museums provide the intersection between the general public and fossils. The contact with actual specimens provides immediacy to the message of museums that is not possible in any other medium. Consequently, museums play a primary role in conveying the excitement of the history of life, methods of scientific inquiry, and the vital importance of collections to the public.
